From its formation in 1914, women have played an important role in the operation of the Victorian Division of the Australian Branch of the British Red Cross Society. Initially, the Australian Branch operated as an administrative body, while the Victorian Division guided fundraising operations. In the first instance, the bulk of the effort was focused upon helping to establish local Red Cross societies and branches. These societies would then focus on raising subscriptions and making goods for hospitals that were caring for soldiers. They also helped to find houses that were then used as convalescent homes. Without the effort of women volunteers, these activities would not have achieved the success that they did.

Community Programs, Australian Red Cross Victoria
Related Entries Archival/Heritage Sources Many community programs grew from the hospital services - Volunteer Motor Corps (now Transport Services), Home Hospitals, Rest Homes and Amelioration - of World War I. From 1927, the Red Cross Auxiliaries became a chief peace-time activity of the Victorian Division. In World War II, remedial activities became known as Rehabilitation, and a Welfare Committee arose. Welfare then became associated with Social Work, which mainly focused on soldiers until the 1970s, when it turned to disadvantaged groups. In the 1980s, Hospital and Community Services encompassed many of these activities. In 1995, this area became more specialised, becoming Community Programs in 2002. Ballarat volunteer computerises Red Cross Victoria
Reporter: Jarrod Watt Friday, 3 October 2003 Red Cross Victoria chair Richard Stone accepts the first of the new PCs from IBM's state manager for Victoria, Michael McMahon. Hear how the Red Cross is to receive over a dozen new computers with thanks to volunteers who worked during the Canberra bushfire crisis. In the thick of the Canberra bushfires a couple of Red Cross volunteers on another 12-hour shift trying to reunite or locate friends and relatives came to one basic conclusion: there had to be a better way. "[During the Canberra fires] we were asked by the police to start up the state inquiry centre on behalf of the ACT, and over a period of about 5-7 days we received some ten thousand phone calls, and we registered some 4,000 people who had been evacuated from their homes. It was a huge operation," says Richard Stone, chair of the Victorian branch of the Red Cross.

Historical background
The VC was first issued on January 29 , recognising acts of valour during the Crimean War of . All VCs are cast from the bronze cascabels of two cannon of Chinese origin that were captured from the Russians at the siege of Sevastopol , although during the First World War metal from guns captured from the Chinese during the Boxer Rebellion was also used. The barrels of the cannon in question are stationed outside the Officers' Mess at the Royal Artillery Barracks at Woolwich . Busiest lines
While many Tube customers have little choice in the time and line and they use to commute, some do. There will always be congestion periods on the Tube because the great majority of people are compelled to travel to and from work at the same time. However, with a little planning and use of the tables below, and 10 minutes earlier or later, you may be able to route your journey to avoid these stretches of the network when they are at their busiest.
