THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE BRITISH
DETECTIVE NOVEL
Bibliography compiled by Helene Androski
University of Wisconsin-Madison/2001
What is a Golden Age classic?

During roughly the 1920s and 1930s, between the World Wars, the British detective novel flourished and set the standard for its type. These books were meant to be entertainments, games where the reader matched wits with the author, so their hallmarks were cleverness of murder and detection methods, graphic violence or sociological comment kept to a minimum, stylish writing, and a satisfactory conclusion where order was restored to the community by an essentially honorable detective to confirm the reader's notion that the English way of life was the best on offer. The modern reader, looking for an escape from a world where social and political problems seem insurmountable, can be just as entertained by the plots and characters and also by the glimpse into the customs and attitudes of a by-gone era.
Some Useful Definitions
Detection Club:
Founded in 1928 by a circle of detective story writers and dedicated to the cultivation of the art. Members swore to abide by a set of rules of fair play with the reader: no concealing of vital clues allowed; the detective solves the crime by his or her wits; no divine inspiration or supernatural intervention allowed; the King's English must be honored. The club still exists, although the rules have been abandoned. Original members included G.K. Chesterton (first president)

Freeman Wills Crofts was born in Dublin and worked in railway engineering. He wrote detective fiction in his spare time until his move to England. Thereafter he wrote full time. To his plots he brought a mind trained in mathematics, specialising in the seemingly unbreakable alibi and transport timetables. His best-known character is Inspector Joseph French. French achieves his results through dogged persistence. Raymond Chandler praised Crofts' plots, calling him 'the soundest builder of them all'.

Myers Literary Guide Centre for Northern Studies FREEMAN WILLS CROFTS (1879 - 1957) Crofts was commonly regarded as one of the big four of the golden age of detective fiction, along with Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers and R. Austin Freeman. Although his style is pedestrian and too fond of alibis depending on railway timetables (he was a railway man himself) some of his plotting is ingenious. He was obviously familiar with Newcastle, as he sets a section of his Groote Park Murder (1924) in and around the city. His detective arrives at Central Station, stays at the Metropole Hotel, and uses Clayton photographic studio as a cover for his activities. There is a deal of driving to and fro, involving Langholm Hill, a country house near Newcastle, and some scrutiny of rail schedules, but Crofts had no eye for architecture in this novel and we gain no impression of the city or its everyday life. Authors of the Golden Age
  • G. K. Chesterton - (1874 - 1936) The creator of Father Brown. Chesterton was an artist, poet, journalist, critic, essayist, novelist, and short story writer. Chesterton was born in London, and wrote for various newspapers and magazine. Chesterton's other detective stories included The Club of Queer Trades and The Man Who Knew Too Much
    E. C. Bentley
    - (1875 - 1956) Author of Trent's Last Case (1913) which is possibly the first modern detective novel. Bentley meant the book to be a parody of the exploits of detectives like Holmes. Instead, he introduced a more human detective who was capable of making mistakes. He also added genuine characterization and a little humor to the novel. Bentley was born in London and educated at St. Paul's School where he met G.K. Chesterton who became his closest friend. Bentley attended Oxford, and then studied law. He was admitted to the bar in London in 1902. Bentley changed his career from law to journalism, and was a journalist for 30 years.
    Mary Roberts Rinehart
(1876-1958) - a prolific American writer of mystery stories. She is also credited with originating the "Had I But Known" form of mystery novels in which the heroine is always getting into dangerous situations. Ms. Rinehart was born in Pittsburgh, PA and attended nursing school. Her husband's investments in the stock market did poorly and she turned to writing to aid with the family finances. Her stories and novels were extremely successful and enabled her to live in luxury.
