F. Marion Crawford, For the Blood Is The Life And Other Stories (White Wolf Press, 1996) F. Marion Crawford (1854-1909) was a popular author around the start of the 20th century. While his novels have fallen out of popular favor, several of his short stories of the supernatural have been reprinted and anthologized throughout this century. For the Blood Is The Life_And Other Stories gathers seven short stories that were collected in Wandering Ghosts On the whole, this is a solid little collection. Crawford was a very straightforward writer and there is none of the overblown flowery language sometimes used in the Victorian era. There is also very little of hidden or implied horror; the monsters and ghosts are shown forthrightly with no less impact for being seen in the light. Indeed, several entries aren't really horror stories at all, although all rely on elements of the supernatural. "The Dead Smile" is a chilling story, in which the death of a cruel father does not end the torments for his son, his niece (who is betrothed to the son), or the rest of the household. Although the atmosphere is appropriately tense, the resolution is disappointingly anticlimactic. (There is a possible implication in the ending that would make it more horrible but I don't think it's what the author had in mind.) "The Screaming Skull" is one of the longer stories in the collection, concerning a skull that, as the title states, periodically screams and a retired naval captain, who may be indirectly responsible for the death of the skull's original owner. The tension is emphasized by the narration being a first-person monologue by the captain, to a visiting friend, as the events occur.

Biography of Charles Anton Knutson Bertun
Charles Anton Knutson Bertun was born in Alesund, Norway, September 28, 1868, and died in Decatur, Illinois, June 6, 1967. He went to sea at the age of 15, and was shipwrecked in 1885 on the Norwegian barkentine COURIER. He later became an American citizen in 1895, graduated from New York Nautical College and captained F. Marion Crawford's yacht, EZRA NYE, an ex-Sandy Hook pilot boat, in the summer of 1896 from New York to Sorrento, Italy. Bertun joined the American Line (International Navigation Company) as fourth officer, gradually working his way through the grades until he commanded the ocean-going steam yacht, ALVINA, owned by the company president. In 1903 he became Marine Superintendent of the line. A merger of the company with several others resulted in a general reorganization of personnel, and rather than taking command of small vessels, Captain Bertun became master of the steam yacht, VENETIA, owned by Morton Plant of New London, Connecticut. He then commanded the IOLANDA, built by Plant in 1908. In 1911 the vessel was sold to Plant's Russian friend Mme. Elisabeth Teretchenko.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman BIO A short introductory biography Charlotte Perkins Gilman founded THE FORERUNNER magazine in 1909 and published and edited it over the next seven years until its demise in 1916. Within this forum Gilman continued to explore, explain, and denounce women's and men's roles as prescribed by society. While her novel HERLAND received scant attention when published in 1915, it has been recognized since its first book publication in 1979 as a benchmark of utopian and feminist fiction. IMAGES
