Synopsis
This is a story of a tradesman hero who makes good through honesty, initiative and hardwork. This echoes the mood of 1851 Great Exhibition with its celebration of British technology, industry and commerce. It shows that virtues that lead to heaven also bring success to earth. The exemplary life of John Halifax could be read both as a story and as a practical guide to virtue and prosperity.

Mortality by Dinah Maria Mulock Craik (1826 - 1887) ("Death is a greater change, not from the state which now is to that which is not, but to that which is not now." Epictetus
"And we shall be changed."
Ye dainty mosses, lichens grey, Pressed each to each in tender fold, And peacefully thus, day by day, Returning to their mould; Brown leaves, that with aerial grace Slip from your branch like birds a-wing, Each leaving in the appointed place Its bud of future spring; If we, God's conscious creatures, knew But half your faith in our decay, We should not tremble as we do When summoned clay to clay. But with an equal patience sweet We should put off this mortal gear, In whatsoe'er new form is meet Content to reappear. Knowing each germ of life He gives Must have in Him its source and rise, Being that of His being lives May change, but never dies. Ye dead leaves, dropping soft and slow, Ye mosses green and lichens fair, Go to your graves, as I will go, For God is also there.

    1. God rest ye, merry gentlemen; let nothing you dismay,
    For Jesus Christ, our Saviour, was born on Christmas-day.
    The dawn rose red o'er Bethlehem, the stars shone through the gray,
    When Jesus Christ, our Saviour, was born on Christmas-day. 2. God rest ye, little children; let nothing you affright,
    For Jesus Christ, your Saviour, was born this happy night;
    Along the hills of Galilee the white flocks sleeping lay,
    When Christ, the Child of Nazareth, was born on Christmas-day. 3. God rest ye, all good Christians; upon this blessed morn
    The Lord of all good Christians was of a woman born:
    Now all your sorrows He doth heal, your sins He takes away; For Jesus Christ, our Saviour, was born on Christmas-day.

This is why we tend to despair when we think that we may have to bear tomorrow's load on today's resources. God wants us to know that we won't. Today's mercies are for today's troubles. Tomorrow's mercies are for tomorrow's troubles.John Piper (A Godward Life, pg. 26) Experience is the child of Thought, and Thought is the child of Action. We can not learn men from books. Benjamin Disraeli, Vivian Grey (1826) Book V, Chap. 1 Every action of our lives touches on some chord that will vibrate in eternity. Sean O'Casey (1880-1964), Irish playwright Whatever troubles come, let us play the man; let us show that we are not such little children as to be cast down by what may happen in this poor fleeting state of time. Our country is Immanuel's land, our hope is above the sky, and therefore, calm as the summer's ocean; we will see the wreck of everything earthborn, and yet rejoice in the God of our salvation.- C.H. Spurgeon's Evening Devotional June 22, The marvelous richness of human experience would lose something of rewarding joy if there were no limitations to overcome. The hilltop hour would not be half so wonderful if there were no dark valleys to traverse. Helen Keller (1880-1968)
