William and Ellen Craft's daring escape from slavery in 1848 made them famous throughout antebellum America, heroes in the eyes of abolitionists and criminals in the eyes of slavery supporters. The unusual circumstances of their flight to freedom were a major factor in their celebrity. Ellen, so light-skinned as to be nearly white, disguised herself in men's clothing and posed as a young white planter to effect her escape. Her husband, William, played the role of her slave. Together, they traveled from Georgia to Philadelphia by train and by boat, often staying in first-class accommodations and always directly under the noses of southern authorities. Americans everywhere were moved by their amazing story of boundary crossing, for the Crafts passed through not only the literal boundary that separated North from South, but also the social boundaries of race, class, and gender that divided the population of the United States.

The art and craft of feature writing By JOE GRIMM
Detroit Free Press
Recruiting and development editor For a two-day engagement, William E. Blundell brought the live performance of his book, "The Art and Craft of Feature Writing," to the Detroit Free Press. Blundell played himself; the cast included an assortment of imaginary friends and pet peeves. In one scene, Blundell had drinks and talked story with the intelligent, interested and totally imagined friend whom Blundell writes for and who reels him back in when his writing gets gassy and bloated. In another scene, Blundell nearly came to blows with his mean alter ego, who jabs Blundell mercilessly with questions and challenges to write leaner, cleaner copy. Blundell's toughest lines, though, pilloried his pet peeves: "I'm a strong opponent of outlining. It's deciding in advance what the story will be, and then just bolting the whole thing together like something out of a hardware store. Tortured transitions are the mark of an outlined story." ... "The anecdotal lead is a plague on newspapers. It is half destroying our business." ... "I believe that one of the things that is ruining our stories is the presence of way too many people saying way too many banal, stupid and unnecessary things. We're not writing research reports; we're writing stories.'' Blundell has a plan, as well as peeves, and you can read the plan in his book. Let's meet some of the peeves.

In January 1849, fugitive slave couple William and Ellen Craft arrived in Boston after traveling over 1000 miles from captivity in Macon, Georgia. Their harrowing escape in which the fair skinned Ellen disguised herself as a White gentleman and the dark-skinned William played the part of her doting slave - illustrates both the power of the Underground Railroad in Boston's antebellum Black community and the power of militant abolitionism in the face of federal pro-slavery legislation. (continued)
In September, 1850, Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Law , which not only provided for the return of fugitive slaves to their masters in the south, but also mandated the assistance of federal marshals and private citizens in the fugitives' capture. The abolitionists in Boston responded by holding a meeting at the African Meeting House on October 4, 1850, during which they voted to organize a group called the League of Freedom to protest the capture of fugitives. The League of Freedom voted Lewis Hayden president and William Craft vice-president. Ten days later, on October 14, the League of Freedom was absorbed into the Boston Vigilance Committee, designed "to secure the colored inhabitants of Boston from any invasion of their rights." On October 20, 1850, agents Hughes and Knight were sent by the Crafts' former owners to Boston to catch the fugitives. The actions of the abolitionist community, as well as the co-ordinated efforts of African-Americans throughout the Beacon Hill neighborhood, is indicative of the power of nineteenth century Black Bostonians, and their White allies, in the face of institutionalized racist policy. Vigilance Committee member William I. Bowditch transported Ellen Craft to the home of abolitionist Ellis G. Loring in Brookline and then to the home of Rev. Theodore Parker. William Craft remained in the Hayden home on Phillips Street, which

William E. Craft, p. 1332
WILLIAM E. CRAFT, a representative of one of the prominent pioneer families of Washington county, was born in 1816 in this county. His great-grandfather, John Craft, was a native of Maryland, and removed to Washington county before the Revolution, being among the first settlers of the locality. He reared four sons, viz.: Lawrence, John, Thomas and William. Lawrence Craft was born in 1750. He married Annie Thompson, a native of Winchester, Va., and became the father of five children: John, Thomas, William, Linda (wife of Benjamin Hoagland) and a son who died in infancy. William, the father of the subject of this sketch, was born in 1789 in Morris township, Washington Co., Penn. He married Mary Elliot, who was born in 1794, a daughter of William Elliot, an old pioneer of this section. To this union eleven children were born, as follows: Betsy, Lawrence, Annie, William E., Martha, Melinda, Jane, David, George, Isaac and Mary. Of these, nine lived to maturity. Martha, Jane, David, George and William E. are at present the only surviving members. Text taken from page 1332 of:

WILLIAM S. CRAFT, one of the leading residents of South Strabane township, was born April 3, 1841, in Morris township, Washington Co., Penn. His grandfather, John Craft, was married to Abigail Conklin, a resident of Morris township, and she bore his children as follows: Lila (Mrs. Thomas Dickerson), David, Permima (Mrs. Samuel Farrabee), Urius, Stewart, Stephen, Conklin, Catherine, and William. After his marriage Mr. Craft remained in Morris township several years, then went to East Finley township, where he died. In politics he was a Democrat, and in religion an active worker and class-leader in the M. E. Church at Mt. Zion. David Craft, son of John and Abigail (Conklin) Craft, was born November 17, 1812, in Morris township, Washington Co., Penn., and there he received his early education. On March 29, 1838, he was married to Mary, daughter of Stephen Mills, a resident of New Jersey. Mr. Mills was married to Experience Lory, and she bore him the following children: Johanna, Deborah, Jonas, William, James, John, Mary, Phoebe, Eliza, Henry and Samuel. Mr. Mills went to Ohio, where he remained some time, and then returned to Washington county, Penn., settling near Taylorstown. He was a carpenter and builder, and in politics belonged to the Democratic party. In religious belief he was united with the Presbyterian Church at Claysville, this county. Mr. and Mrs. Craft spent the first years of their married life in East Finley township, Washington county, and then removed to Morris township, in 1841, settling on the home farm. They have had the following family of children: John M. (living in Kansas City). William S. (subject of this sketch), Thomas (deceased), Stewart G. (residing in Idaho), Phoebe C. (deceased), Stephen L. (deceased), Jonas L. (living in Oregon), Catherine (deceased), Melissa, Della J. (Mrs. Oscar Lindley, living in Kansas) and Mary A. (Mrs. J. M. Patterson, of Washington, Penn.). Mr. Craft first built a log house, and afterward erected a frame dwelling, which was burned, and which he rebuilt. He was an active member of the Democratic Party, and in church connection was an adherent of the M. E. Church for fifty years, serving as trustee during much of that time. Mr. Craft died February 19, 1890, and was buried at Mt. Zion.

There was an entry on my William and Ellen Craft post of January 31st 2004 from Betty Craft who is a direct descendant of William and Ellen. For those of you who missed this they were two black slaves who escaped from slavery in the US and came to Britain where they joined the campaign against slavery. They wrote a remarkable tract called Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom. http://docsouth.unc.edu/neh/craft/menu.html (I hope this works better then some of my other attempts at linking!) Various attempts have been made to follow their movements in the UK but all I can find out is that they lived in Hammersmith while they went to speak at various meetings around the UK. There is a blue plate on the wall of Craft House which is where they lived although the original house has been demolished. Does anyone know anymore?
