My artwork is made of layers of hand-dyed silk, linen and cotton. Shibori techniques create surface pattern, while machine quilting and cutting through to underlying layers make complex textures. Raw edges reveal the integrity of woven cloth and imply that these pieces are torn from the larger body of textile arts. Patches and mending stitches speak of thrift and nurturing.
Through my work, I explore the relationship of landscape and spirit. I use Shibori techniques that were developed in Japan to simulate patterns found in nature. By stitching and shaping the cloth before dyeing, the cloth takes on textures and patterns that reflect the mountain landscape in which I live. The process literally takes the cloth through similar changes of time and wind and weather that have shaped the earth around us. The process is chancy and surprising. Preparing the cloth is intensive, but Shibori always gives me more than I have planned for.

    How to Get Famous
Tips from talent scouts and locals who've made it big
by Ellen Mallernee A year-and-a-half ago, 26-year-old Jonny Miller lived in Lenoir City and worked for a construction company that builds Kentucky Fried Chickens and hospitals. Now he lives 2,200 miles away in Los Angeles, makes movies with Jessica Simpson, runs in the same circles as Paris Hilton and is, as he says, having the time of his life.
After years of shirking suggestions that he ought to model, Miller enrolled in classes at Barbizon in Knoxville, to alleviate his timidity more than anything else, he says. Tickled pink with his ocean-colored eyes, curling brown hair, and preposterous abs, Barbizon agents flew Miller to New York City for an International Modeling and Talent Association (IMTA) convention. Soon thereafter, he signed with an agent, and moved to California with his shiny new confidence. CSI: Las Vegas (he had five lines and made $8,000), Young and the Restless and Arrested Development Dukes of Hazzard Bottoms Up with Paris Hilton and a Gavin Owens film

In this section you can find pictures of many of the crafts I have made and some stories about my crafts. To get things started, here are a few stories about my history with crafts... I started out crocheting when I was a little girl. My mom taught me how when I was about 5 years old. I started out making blankets and doll clothes. Last year, my little sister Kayla found a blanket that I had started making but stopped about half way through. It was a pretty ugly looking thing. It looks like I was making it out of scrap yarn. I did a series of single crochets in one color and then, when I ran out of that color, I simply joined on the next. Kayla really wanted me to finish the blanket and give it to my daughter Karen but I decided to let Kayla experiment with it instead. A few years later, when I was about 7 years old, my mother taught me how to knit. She did not do a great job, however, as I have been told that I knit backwards. When I first heard this I figured that my mother must also knit backwards but it turns out that she knits correctly. I have tried to fix the problem but I fear it is too late. And, it gives my stitches an interesting and unique look (and it works) so I am going to stick with my technique. I did not really knit or crochet much during my teenage years but picked it up again in college when I made a sweater for my sister Shannon and two sweaters for my newest sister Kayla. After that my hobby really took off as I started making at least one new thing every three or four weeks. I made afghans, sweaters (mostly baby sweaters), stuffed animals and more.
