While continuing to work in traditional flat glass I have developed a unique form of glass constructions, make varied kaleidoscopes with exceptionally bright images and am enjoying immensely working with a kiln to fuse and slump glass.

Senior Partner: Barbara McCaskill English/African American Literature and Culture I am working on a book about William and Ellen Craft, two slaves who escaped from Macon, Georgia in 1848. My book seeks to answer the following questions: How did British and American writers in the 19th and early 20th centuries appropriate the story of the Crafts’ lives in slavery and amazing escape for their own activist purposes? Why did the Crafts, particularly Ellen, remain publicly silent about controversial aspects of their lives? What does the proliferation of commemorations, re-enactments, and plays about the Craft’s lives in the 21st century say about contemporary attitudes towards slavery and freedom? I believe a student can bring to this project, particularly to my research of visual images and public rituals, a fresh eye and unbiased perspective that will be very helpful in writing this book about one story of slavery and its continuing resonances in contemporary culture.

(University Press of Mississippi, 226 pages). By SAM HODGES of Knight Ridder Newspapers Published Sunday, April 10, 2005 She’s yet another fine Mississippi-born writer, but the precision and clarity of her prose suggest Hemingway more than Faulkner. The Gilchrist sensibility - bracingly open about everything, including sex, her four marriages, her years of psychotherapy and her successful struggle to quit drinking - is hers alone. If it’s possible to speak of a writer having charisma on the page, she is a charismatic writer. Gilchrist briefly writes about Eudora Welty, whom she studied with at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. The depiction is loving but not sentimental.

Her features were prominent, hair straight, eyes of a light hazel color, and no one on first seeing the white slave would suppose that a drop of African blood coursed through her veins. With the permission of their owners, William and Ellen were united in marriage, after the fashion of the slaves. But both of these persons had long been lamenting their sad condition, and were only waiting for an opportunity of escaping from the house of bondage. It is usual, among what are called good slaveholders, to give their servants the Christmas week as a time of rest and pleasure. Such was the custom of the owners of William and Ellen. As the Christmas of 1848 approached, the Crafts, instead of studying how they should best spend their time in pleasure, began maturing a plan of escape. "I don't think this is a good half dollar," said William, as he finished counting his money late one night. "Still," continued he, "I shall have no trouble in passing it." "If some persons had your money, they would have a jolly time this Christmas," remarked Ellen. "I wish we could get our freedom with it," replied the husband. "Now, William," said the wife, "listen to me, and take my advice, and we shall be free in less than a month." "Let me hear your plans, then,"said William. "Take part of your money and purchase me a good suit of gentlemen's apparel, and when the white people give us our holiday, let us go off to the North, instead of spending our time in

Be thou a covert to them from the face of the spoiler. - Isaiah 16:3-4 (qtd. in Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom; or, the Escape of William and Ellen Craft from Slavery 98) From 1830-1860, in the decades that foregrounded the Dred Scott Decision, Fugitive Slave Law, Secession, and Civil War, the published lives of African American women resulted from both restless imaginings and raw guts. Free African American women who wrote of their sisters and themselves in letters to the antislavery press constantly negotiated matrices of silence and speech, of servitude and freedom, of chaos and humanity, of ignorance and education, of solitude and community. One paradigm for the issues enunciated by these letters of antebellum African American women and extended in their separately published autobiographies is provided by material written by and about the American fugitive Ellen Craft.
