Botany at the University of Chicago The University of Chicago opened in 1892 as an institution strongly committed to faculty research and graduate training. William Rainey Harper, the university's brilliant young president, recruited a remarkable group of scholars and scientists to be members of the first faculty. Eight of the initial group of professors were former college or university presidents, and another, Albert A. Michelson, was the first American to win the Nobel prize in physics. The University of Chicago's leading role in scientific research was strengthened in 1894, when Harper appointed John Merle Coulter (1851-1928) to lead the newly established Department of Botany. Coulter was a leading American botanist and a friend of Asa Gray (1810-1888), the famed Harvard botanist whose Manual of Botany and other texts dominated plant science in the United States. Coulter had founded the

G-M N-Z Introduction K nowing about the people who collected, studied, described, named, and cataloged the plants of an area gives us a better understanding of the history of that area, the relationships among scientists and explorers at that time, the progress of science, and the rigors endured in the quest for knowledge and beauty. The botanists who roamed the American West in the 19th century are an especially interesting group because they collected and cataloged at a time of worldwide enthusiasm for exploration and scientific advancement. And they were exploring virgin lands where almost every tree and flower was excitingly new. Enthusiasm and joy in discovery floods out of their reports, journals, newspaper articles, and books. It was a very heady time for all explorers. The biographies below also indicate that the botanists were not just "Botanists"; they were intrepid hikers, climbers, campers, geologists, paleontologists, surveyors, and writers. Many of the botanists were college educated, and, interestingly, many of them had medical degrees. The schooling in the scientific method and the use of medicinal plants served them well in their search for new plants and new knowledge.

In this he is credited with discovery of the "reversing layer." Astronomy / Physics William Healey Dall (1845-1927) published Alaska and Its Resources (Boston). Powell continued at the head until it was ended in 1879. For a time associated with the Smithsonian Institution, in 1874 the Survey was transferred to the Department of Interior. Government—Federal / Geology Congress effectively assigned to the Army's Signal Service the task of providing meteorological information and weather forecasting, the beginnings of a national weather service, with part of its mission being aid to agriculture and business. At the time, the Signal Service was under the charge of Colonel Albert J. Myer (1829-1880). In 1871, Cleveland Abbe (1838-1916) became associated with the enterprise as a civilian meteorologist.

(1.75 linear feet) Ms Coll 41 American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract One of the founding figures of American parasitology, Henry Baldwin Ward was a professor of zoology at the Universities of Nebraska (1893-1909) and Illinois (1909-1933). The first American to offer a laboratory course in parasitology and the first to offer graduate instruction in the field, Ward's research interests touched on the medical aspects of parasitology, fish parasitology and ichthyology, fresh water biology, and ecology. The Ward Papers include just under 2 linear feet of professional correspondence dating primarily between the period of Ward's graduate education in Germany in the late 1880s until the time of his retirement in 1933, dealing primarily with parasitological and ichthyological research, the exchange of specimens and publications, and the Journal of Parasitology . Some files include retained copies of letters written by Ward to accompany the letters received.
  • Background note Administrative information Background note A zoologist and educator, Henry Baldwin Ward (1865-1945) is remembered as the "father of American parasitology." Born in Troy, New York, Ward was raised in a scientifically-inclined family that included his father, Richard Halsted Ward, a microscopist and physician, and aunt, Anna Lydia Ward, an explorer and lecturer. After receiving his A.B. from Williams College in 1885, and three years of teaching science in the local high school, Ward pursued postgraduate study in Germany, spending time at the Universities of Gottingen, Freiburg, and Leipzig, working as well at three of the most advanced marine biological stations in Europe at Naples, Ville-Franche-sur-Mer, and Helgoland. At Leipzig, Ward came particularly under the influence of Rudolph Leuckart, who is often credited as being the founder of the science of parasitology, and a noted expert on
