James Fenimore Cooper
James Fenimore Cooper American novelist, was born at Burlington, New Jersey , on the 15th of September . Reared in the wild country round Otsego Lake, New York, on the yet unsettled estates of his father, a judge and member of Congress , he was sent to school at Albany and at New Haven , and entered Yale at fourteen, remaining for some time the youngest student on the rolls. Three years afterwards he joined the United States Navy ; but after making a voyage or two in a merchant vessel, to perfect himself in seamanship, and obtaining his lieutenancy, he married and resigned his commission (1811). He settled in Westchester County, New York Precaution , a novel of the fashionable school. This was followed (1821) by The Spy , which was very successful at the date of issue; The Pioneers (1823), the first of the Leatherstocking series; and The Pilot (1824), a bold and dashing sea-story. The next was Lionel Lincoln (1825), a feeble and unattractive work; and this was succeeded in 1826 by the famous Last of the Mohicans , a book that is often quoted as its author's masterpiece. Rural Hours
Well, at the start of this week, I was pretty sure that by the end of it, I'd be able to announce either a baby or a book. The baby doesn't seem to be in any hurry to appear (yes, the due date was last Sunday) but I've just finished proofing another book.
My hands are still giving me RSI problems, due to the pregnancy, so I'm still not responding to my email. However, please DO KEEP SENDING IN YOUR CHAPTERS (in RTF format) as you finish them. I appreciate them even though I'm not replying to them right away. (I also recommend that you keep around a copy, yourselves, until I do reply, just in case I have problems with something you've sent.)
"Rural Hours" (1887 edition) by Susan Fenimore Cooper
http://digital.library.upenn.edu/wo
men/cooper/hours/hours.html
Susan Fenimore Cooper (1813-1894) is the near-forgotten daughter of James Fenimore Cooper, who wrote the American classic "The Last of the Mohicans". An accomplished amateur naturalist in her own right, Susan kept a meticulous daily diary detailing her observations of the plant and animal life of upstate New York, intermixed with occasional discursions on the human community and country in which she lived. This provided the basis for her first published book, "Rural Hours", which went through six successful editions, the last in 1887. It's unfortunate that the final edition doesn't include the gorgeous color illustrations that appeared in some earlier ones. I was only able to get a copy of the last edition: not surprisingly, the illustrated editions tend to be rare and expensive.
