Description : The objective of "The Writings of James Fenimore Cooper" is to provide critically-edited scholarly texts for works of fiction and social criticism by the most important American author in the first half of the 19th century. James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851), more than anyone else in his time, created a succession of works raising fundamental questions about a distinctive American identity. As a professional author, Cooper worked hard to improve the texts of his work, which (especially early in his career) suffered from egregious errors in the press. The Cooper Edition thus documents Cooper's attention to improving his texts whenever opportunities arose for him to correct editions after the first. Implementation description : The Cooper Edition has published 18 texts as of 2002. All new editorial projects after that date will use TEI procedures in preparing the scholarly editions. Our intent is that the Edition will be able to make available electronically materials not previously part of printed texts, such as long cancellations.

He was the son of a wealthy, landowning Judge William Cooper, born in Burlington, New Jersey. The year after his birth, the family moved to Cooperstown, New York, a frontier settlement founded by Judge Cooper near Otsego Lake. Sent to Yale at thirteen, Cooper was expelled in his third year and was sent to sea, partly in the merchant marines, and then as a midshipman in the US navy. In 1811, he married Susan DeLancey and settled down as a gentleman farmer.
The first of Cooper's fifty-odd books, Precaution (1820), was a failure, but his second, The Spy (1821), was a patriotic story of the American Revolution and was an immediate success. He and his wife lived abroad from 1826 - 1833, and during this time he vigorously defended American democracy in his writings, but on his return to the United States he was so disgusted by what he saw as the tyranny of the majority, or even mob rule, that he acquired conservative and aristocratic views which made him unpopular as a social commentator.
In 1823, Cooper published

Fenimore Cooper
James Fenimore Cooper was born on September 15, 1789 in Burlington, New Jersey, the twelfth of thirteen children. In 1790, the family moved to Lake Otsego, in upstate New York. Early experiences in a frontier town gave Cooper the background for The Pioneers (1823), among other frontier novels. After being expelled from Yale College, in 1806 he tried to run away to sea, but his father intervened and got him a commission in the United States Navy. He sailed twice to England and served at a frontier outpost on Lake Ontario before being assigned to recruit sailors in New York City, where he met his future wife. After the deaths of his father and older brothers left him heavily in debt, Cooper cast about for a reliable source of income, and his career as a writer began. His first tale, Precaution , was published in 1820; the work and its reception were agreeable enough to encourage Cooper to continue, and his next novel, The Spy: A Tale of the Neutral Ground (1821) established him as an exciting new presence on the American literary scene. Quotes of the Day for 15 September 2003 - James Fenimore Cooper
James Cooper was born at Burlington, New Jersey on this day in 1789. His father was an ambitious judge who made a fortune in land development, and married another fortune. William Cooper packed up his family to move to his new project, Cooperstown, New York. James was sent to Yale at age thirteen, where he was expelled for his pranks in his junior year. He went to sea, first as a merchant seaman, then in the Navy. On his father's death, his newfound financial independence allowed him to leave the Navy and take up the life of the gentleman farmer. Disgusted with the book he was reading a few years later, he told his wife he could write better. She suggested he prove it, and though his first book was a failure, he became America's first novelist. He added Fenimore, his mother's maiden name, to his in 1826, the same year Last of the Mohicans was released. The Americans ... are almost ignorant of the art of music, one of the most elevating, innocent and refining of human tastes, whose influence on the habits and morals of a people is of the most beneficial tendency.
