  • A Bio-bibliographical note about James Fenimore Cooper
"Born in 1789, James Fenimore Cooper, the twelfth child in a family of thirteen was educated for a time at Yale until a series of pranks got him expelled when he was sixteen. In 1805 he joined a merchant ship bound for Europe and after obtaining his midshipman's warrant served with the US Navy until 1810. His resignation following his father's death and his decision to marry Susan De Lancey meant he returned to help run the family estate. "In 1820 he plunged into a literary career when his wife challenged his claim that he could write a better book than the English novel he was reading to her. The result was Precaution , which was quickly followed by his early successes such as The Spy The Pioneers (the first of the Leatherstocking Tales)

L imited Edition of 1000 numbered sets. Cooper's death in 1851 renewed interest in his work; collected editions appeared often in the next fifty years. This Putnam edition was issued in sixteen volumes and sold by subscription. The Last of the Mohicans and Jack Tier (1848) make up volume seven, with the other four Leatherstocking Tales issued separately throughout the series in no particular order. T he iconographic stature of The Leatherstocking Tales in American literature began to unravel in 1895. Mark Twain published a scathing essay berating the literary merit of Cooper's work. The now famous "Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offences," published in the July 1895 North American Review , ridiculed Cooper's florid style and contrived plotlines, calling The Deerslayer "a literary delirium tremens."

D espite Twain's criticism, The Last of the Mohicans has retained its status as a classic mainly as an adventure narrative. This Natty Bumppo tale, more than any other Cooper work, employed the Gothic devices of suspense, horror and constant action. Some early critics complained it was little more than an adventure tale, but this page-turner quality propelled it to instant popularity. Like other adventure narratives of the era, such as Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island , it became over time, to be seen as a children's book although never intended for that audience. This transformation often involved extensive abridgement or "adaptation" from the original. The Bible Homer Aristophanes Virgil ... Special Collections Home Page

    James Fenimore Cooper
Cooper (1789-1851) wrote both novels and social criticism. It is his fiction that has become famous, but it is worth remembering that he also wrote books criticizing the shortcomings of democracy in his own country. He is the first important writer to be critical of the United States but he will by no means be the last. His fiction is much more memorable, however. The Last of the Mohicans , written in 1826, is the second novel in Cooper's Leatherstocking Series. Consisting of five novels, the series gets it title from one of the names applied to its frontiersman hero, Natty Bumppo, who is also called Deerslayer, Hawkeye, Pathfinder, and Leatherstocking. The five novels tell the story of Bumppo from youth to old age. The other books in the series are: The Pioneers The Prairie The Pathfinder (1840); and The Deerslayer The creation of the character of Natty Bumppo is probably the most significant thing that happened in American literature during the first 50 years of its history. Like Sir Walter Scott and another romantic writers who dealt with historical or legendary characters, Cooper, in his tales about Bumppo, unfolded an epic account, Bumppo, a frontiersman whose actions were shaped by the forest in which he lived, seems to be related in some way to the deepest meaning of the American experience itself.
