James Fenimore Cooper
James Fenimore Cooper, JFC was born James Cooper on September 15, 1789 in Burlington, New Jersey. (The "Fenimore" was legally added only in 1826.) His parents, William Cooper and Elizabeth Fenimore Cooper, were both Quakers, though they drifted into a generalized Protestantism, attending Episcopal and Presbyterian services. JFC was the twelfth of thirteen children, of which only four brothers and two sisters also survived childhood. In 1790 the family moved to Lake Otsego, in upstate New York, where William Cooper had purchased a large tract of land and founded a settlement he called Cooperstown. There he served as a Federalist judge and local squire, with large political and social ambitions. Early experiences in a frontier town gave JFC the background for The Pioneers (1823), among other frontier novels. In 1800 JFC's beloved older sister, Hannah, was killed at 23 in a fall from a horse. After boarding for schooling in Albany , JFC attended Yale College 1803-1805 but was expelled, apparently for a dangerous prank involving blowing up another student's door. In 1806 he tried to run away to sea, but his father intervened and got him a commission in the United States Navy. He sailed twice to

Democratic Origins and Revolutionary Writers, 1776-1820: James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851)
Index James Fenimore Cooper, like Irving, evoked a sense of the past and gave it a local habitation and a name. In Cooper, though, one finds the powerful myth of a golden age and the poignance of its loss. While Irving and other American writers before and after him scoured Europe in search of its legends, castles, and great themes, Cooper grasped the essential myth of America: that it was timeless, like the wilderness. American history was a trespass on the eternal; European history in America was a reenactment of the fall in the Garden of Eden. The cyclical realm of nature was glimpsed only in the act of destroying it: The wilderness disappeared in front of American eyes, vanishing before the oncoming pioneers like a mirage. This is Cooper's basic tragic vision of the ironic destruction of the wilderness, the new Eden that had attracted the colonists in the first place. Personal experience enabled Cooper to write vividly of the transformation of the wilderness and of other subjects such as the sea and the clash of peoples from different cultures. The son of a Quaker family, he grew up on his father's remote estate at Otsego Lake (now Cooperstown) in central New York State. Although this area was relatively peaceful during Cooper's boyhood, it had once been the scene of an Indian massacre. Young Fenimore Cooper grew up in an almost feudal environment. His father, Judge Cooper, was a landowner and leader. Cooper saw frontiersmen and Indians at Otsego Lake as a boy; in later life, bold white settlers intruded on his land.

It has been filmed several times, among others in 1936 and 1992. Through his Leatherstocking series Cooper created the archetype of the 18th-century frontiersman, Natty Bumppo. He lives free, close to nature, while the settlers bring 'civilization' that destroys the wilderness. Cooper wrote over thirty novels - he considered THE PATHFINDER (1841) and THE DEERSLAYER (1840) his best works. "Few men exhibit greater diversity, or, if we may so express it, greater antithesis of character than the native warrior of North America. In war, he is daring, boastful, cunning, ruthless, self-denying, and self-devoted; in peace, just, generous, hospitable, revengeful, superstitious, modest, and commonly chaste." (from The Last of the Mohicans James Fenimore Cooper was born in Burlington, New Jersey, the son of Quakers, Judge William Cooper and Elisabeth Fenimore Cooper. His father was a representative of the 4th and 6th Congress, and had attained wealth by developing virgin land. The family moved to Cooperstown, New York, which Judge Cooper had founded. James Fenimore spent his youth partly on the family estate on the shores of Otsego Lake. He roamed in the primeval forest and developed a love of nature which marked his books. Cooper was educated in the village school, and in 1800-02 in the household of the rector of St. Peter's.

COOPER, JAMES FENIMORE
, novelist and historian. Son of a Federalist judge, Cooper was expelled from Yale for a dangerous prank. He then joined the navy but resigned his commission to marry. He converted to Jeffersonian principles, but then tried to live as an eighteenth-century gentleman while the fevers of Jacksonian democracy swept the land. At the height of his popularity as a novelist, he took his family to Europe, and during his seven-year stay, he wrote a fascinating assessment of his native land, Notions of the Americans (1829), and gathered the materials for four travel books. A Letter to His Countrymen (1834) was a bitter attack on American provincialism. Upon his return in 1833 he retreated to Cooperstown and plunged into a series of lawsuits designed to force the townspeople to respect the sanctity of private property and truth in journalism. The American Democrat (1838), designed as a textbook for high school students, lectured Americans on their political and social responsibilities. By the time of his death Cooper had developed an international reputation as America's "national novelist," but he was also a keen observer of the political and cultural life of his nation, an accomplished controversialist, and a fine naval historian. His studies of naval history included
