The most complete books on the Pony Express are by and Roy Bloss . However, neither are annotated which is frustrating for a researcher. Settle does have a good bibliography. From Settle's papers he did have footnotes prepared, but the editors chose not to use them. They wanted to make the book more popular with the general reader. Settle was not pleased with that. Settle wrote in the mid-1950s and was the first to use the Waddell Collection at the Huntington Library, San Marino, California. Bloss wrote for the Pony Express Centennial.
