Eleanor Parmenter and
Sister Marguerite Frost ACQUISITION
: The University of New Hampshire purchased the Eleanor Parmenter Churchill Collection in August 1995 from Shaker book and manuscript dealer Scott De Wolfe of Alfred, Maine. ACCESS : There are no restrictions on access to this collection. : Requests for permission to publish materials from this collection should be discussed with the Special Collections Librarian. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE : Eleanor Parmenter (1914-1994) first arrived at the Canterbury Shaker Village on June 14, 1926, six months before her twelfth birthday. She resided with the Shakers for several years along with several other orphaned and abandoned children. While at Canterbury, Eleanor attended school taught by Sister Marguerite Frost. She worked alongside the Shaker sisters and participated in many aspects of life at the Village, including the Shakers' numerous plays, parades, and day trips. In 1939 Eleanor left Canterbury and shortly thereafter she married Sam Churchill. Until Sam's death in 1971 the couple frequently visited and corresponded with the Shaker sisters. Eleanor eventually remarried (Dick Schopp), and she continued to maintain contact with the remaining sisters until the passing of Ethel Hudson, the last Canterbury Shaker, in 1992. Eleanor died in 1994, the victim of a car accident.

The Black Experience in America by Norman Coombs
This is a history of the United States of America as seen from the perspective of its Black citizens. Originally a text book, I would guess targeting the 4th through 6th grades, it was donated to the public domain by it's author, Norman Coombs. I found it on Project Gutenberg and have been hawking it for years.
CHAPTER 1 African Origins
CHAPTER 1 African Origins: The Human Cradle
To trace the importance of the African heritage one must go back millions of years. Evidence is accumulating to the effect that Africa is the cradle of mankind. Professor Louis Leakey argues that Africa was important in the development of mankind in three ways. First, some thirty or forty million years ago, the basic stock which eventually gave rise to both man and the ape came into existence in the vicinity of the Nile Valley. Second, some twelve or fourteen million years ago, the main branch which was to lead to the development of man broke away from the branch leading to the ape. Third, about two million years ago, in the vicinity of East Africa, true man broke away from his now extinct manlike cousins. The present species of man-Homo Sapiensdeveloped through a complex process of natural selection from a large number of different manlike creatures-hominids. One of the most numerous of the early hominids was Australopithecus Africanus who originated in Africa. Although he also did some hunting, he lived mainly by collecting and eating vegetables. One of the things that identified him as a man was his utilization of primitive tools. He had a pointed stone which may have been used to sharpen sticks, and these sticks were probably used for digging roots to augment his food supply. Leakey believes that Homo Habilis, who lived in East Africa about two million years ago, was the immediate ancestor of man and the most advanced of all the hominids. Although the hominids spread far outside of Africa, it is clear that they originate there and that it was in Africa that true man first emerged. As Darwin predicted a century ago, Africa has been found to be the father of mankind.

Jazz Age Culture
Part I
The Flapper Era
Julius Engelhard, "Mode Ball" 1928 "Hip flasks of hooch, jazz, speakeasies, bobbed hair, 'the lost generation.' The Twenties are endlessly fascinating. It was the first truly modern decade and, for better or worse, it created the model for society that all the world follows today." (from Kevin Rayburn, "Two Views of the 1920s.")
[The flapper] symbolized an age anxious to enjoy itself, anxious to forget the past, anxious to ignore the future. (from Jacques Chastenet, "Europe in the Twenties" in Purnell's History of the Twentieth Century
"It was during what we might call the Flapper period, or the Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties that American popular culture began to capture the imagination of the world. . . . [America] was inventing its own modernity. . . . "
