It was not until he was in his thirties that he made his first contact with English people when he joined the crew of an English ship. At the age of 17 he had begun work as a seaman on a French vessel but ten years later he became a qualified master mariner and a naturalised British subject. He left the sea and became a professional writer ten years after this though nautical stories and themes continued to dominate his writing. He also wrote graphically of his experience of what would be later called the third world - the world of central Africa, the South East Asian islands, the wilder republics of South America - in such successful novels as Almayer's Folly, The Outcast of the Islands and Nostromo which in some ways share the later atmosphere of Graham Greene 's African and Latin American stories. He also explored at a deep level the nature of heroism as in, for example, Lord Jim and the nature of the modern revolutionary in The Secret Agent.
