John Dryden
George Etherege Aphra Behn ... home John Dryden (1631-1700) The Seventeenth Century's most important literary figure and one of the most versatile writers in the history of English literature, Dryden was a professional man of letters, the first ever to be officially elected Poet Laureate. He was a poet, playwright, essayist, translator, literary critic, Fellow of the Royal Society and Historiographer Royal. Samuel Johnson called him 'the father of English criticism.' He began his career in drama by writing three comedies, these were none too successful. His first real success came in 1665 with The Indian Emperor , the sequel to The Indian Queen . In the next fourteen years he turned out on average one play a year. In 1670 he wrote one of his most famous plays The Conquest of Granada, this was written in the heroic tragedy form, a conflict between love and honour in rhyming couplets, full of rant and bombast. Dryden's first attempt at blank verse in imitation of Shakespeare was to become his greatest play, All For Love . One of England's greatest critics, he was the first to develop a major body of criticism. Much of this comes in the form of prefaces. He died in May 1700 and was buried in the grave of Chaucer in Westminster Abbey.

    John Dryden (1631-1700)
    To my Dear Friend Mr. Congreve on his Comedy Call'd the Double Dealer
    Well then; the promis'd hour is come at last; The present age of wit obscures the past: Strong were our sires; and as they fought they writ, Conqu'ring with force of arms, and dint of wit; Theirs was the giant race, before the Flood; And thus, when Charles return'd, our empire stood. Like Janus he the stubborn soil manur'd, With rules of husbandry the rankness cur'd: Tam'd us to manners, when the stage was rude; And boisterous English wit, with art endu'd. Our age was cultivated thus at length; But what we gained in skill we lost in strength. Our builders were, with want of genius, curst; The second temple was not like the first: Till you, the best Vitruvius, come at length; Our beauties equal; but excel our strength. Firm Doric pillars found your solid base: The fair Corinthian crowns the higher space; Thus all below is strength, and all above is grace. In easy dialogue is Fletcher's praise: He mov'd the mind, but had not power to raise.

    A HUE AND CRY AFTER FAIR AMORET by: William Congreve (1670-1729)
      AIR Amoret is gone astray
      Pursue and seek her, ev'ry lover;
      I'll tell the signs by which you may
      The wand'ring Shepherdess discover.
      Coquette and coy at once her air,
      Both studied, tho' both seem neglected;
      Careless she is, with artful care,
      Affecting to seem unaffected.
      With skill her eyes dart ev'ry glance,
      Yet change so soon you'd ne'er suspect them,
      For she'd persuade they wound by chance,
      Tho' certain aim and art direct them.
      She likes herself, yet others hates
      For that which in herself she prizes;
      And, while she laughs at them, forgets
      She is the thing that she despises.
