    Letters from London July 2000
    Liam's
    Letter from London I
t all started on the Tuesday when I was passing urine in the evening. There was a slight feeling of a burning sensation, but this had happened before and I did not pay too much attention. A s the evening turned into night matters began to get seriously out of hand. There was a burning feeling continually in my penis and when I tried to urinate it was agony. The night was long and horrific and if I got up once, I got up fifty times. I could find little comfort and was just about able to pass a little urine at each attempt. I rang my doctor first thing in the morning and was very fortunate to get an afternoon appointment. The young lady doctor tested me positively me for an infection and put me on a course of anti biotics and asked to call back to the surgery on the following Friday for a detailed result. The day turned into evening and the pain and discomfort were getting worse. At eight o'clock in the evening I rang the emergency out of hours doctor as it was all getting unbearable. He said to take paracetemol painkillers and wait for the anti biotics to work T he painkillers helped for a bit and eased the discomfort but then there was a backlash and I was in real trouble. There was an urgent and continual need to urinate but each time I tried it was agony and I was unable to pass anything at all. I rang the emergency doctor again at three in the morning and asked should I get myself to casualty as there did not seem to be any possibility of anyone coming out to help me. He agreed and I just about happened to have enough cash to pay for a mini cab to St Mary's Paddington. As we trolled along through the quiet London streets the Turkish driver told me of the often racist attitude he had met in casualty and how he had to pay privately for treatment for an abscess under his lip. At least his description of his misery took my mind off my troubles and he wished me good luck when we reached Mary's.

    MERLIN
MERLIN, Arthur's adviser, prophet and magician, is basically the creation of Geoffrey of Monmouth , who in his twelfth-century History of the Kings of Britain The Idylls of the King , Tennyson makes him the architect of Camelot . Mark Twain, parodying Tennyson's Arthurian world, makes Merlin a villain, and in one of the illustrations to the first edition of Twain's work illustrator Dan Beard's Merlin has Tennyson's face. Numerous novels, poems and plays center around Merlin. In American literature and popular culture, Merlin is perhaps the most frequently portrayed Arthurian character.

    VIVIEN (NINEVE, NIMUE, NINIANE)
Vivien, sometimes called Nineve, Nimue, Niniane, etc., is best known as the woman who seals Merlin in a cave or a tree. Despite foreseeing his fate, Merlin is unable to prevent being captivated and captured by the woman Richard Wilbur has called "a creature to bewitch a sorcerer." Vivien is an ambiguous character. In Malory, for example, even though Nyneve, who is one of the Ladies of the Lake, deprives Arthur of Merlin's service, she rescues him twice, first by saving him from Accolon who has been given Excalibur by Morgan le Fay to use against Arthur, and then by preventing him from donning the destructive cloak sent to him by Morgan. She also uses her enchantments to punish Ettarde for her mistreatment of Pelleas. In the end she and Pelleas "lovede togedyrs duryng their lyfe." The character is ambiguous even in her earliest appearances. In the French Vulgate Estoire de Merlin , she loves the enchanter and seals him in a beautiful tower, magically constructed, so that she can keep him always for herself. She visits him regularly and grants her love to him. In the continuation to the Vulgate

Anglo-Irish literature begins, as an English critic has observed, with Goldsmith and Sheridan humming some urban song as they stroll down an English laneway. That is, it begins chronologically in that way. At the time when Goldsmith and Sheridan might be supposed to be strolling down English laneways, Ireland, for all but a fraction of the people, was a Gaelic-speaking country with a poetry that had many centuries of cultivation. Afterwards English speech began to make its way through the country, and an English-speaking audience became important for Ireland. And then, at the end of the eighteenth century came Thomas Moore, a singer who knew little of the depth or intensity of the Gaelic consciousness, but who, through a fortunate association, was able to get into his songs a racial distinctiveness. At the end of the eighteenth century the harpers who had been wandering through the country, playing the beautiful traditional music, were gathered together in Belfast. The music that they were the custodians of was noted down and published by Bunting and by Power. With such collections before them the Irish who had been educated in English ways and English thought were made to realize that they had a national heritage.
