Wilkie Collins
William Wilkie Collins was born in London on January 8, 1824, the oldest son of a fashionable artist. He was named after Sir David Wilkie, a friend of the family. After an early career in business, he studied law and was admitted to the bar, though he apparently never practiced. He also tried his hand at painting, and wrote many articles and stories that were published anonymously. A biography of his father was his first major published work, the success of which encouraged him to write for a living. His first novel, a historical work called Antonina or The Fall of Rome , was published in 1850. In 1851, Collins was introduced to Charles Dickens by a mutual friend. The two formed a lasting friendship, and worked together on Dickens’s magazines, Household Words and All the Year Round , where many of Collins’s works appeared in serial form. Collins was one of the pioneers of the mystery and suspense genre, and his most famous novels include The Woman in White and The Moonstone . The latter was mostly dictated while he was bed-ridden and suffering from gout. He died in 1889.

Unafraid to question Victorian social mores, Collins never married but maintained two families. He lived both with Caroline Graves (whom he met in a midnight encounter such as is described in The Woman in White), and with Martha Rudd. In later life, Collins became addicted to opium, and from 1870 to his death in 1889, his novels became concerned with social issues, and are considered inferior to his earlier output. However, in recent years, Collins’ oeuvre has received renewed critical attention, a recent biography hailing him as the king of inventors.

Wilkie Collins
"Laudanum - divine laudanum - was his only friend" Wilkie Collins had a prodigious opium habit. He is famous for writing one of the first detective-novels in British fiction, The Moonstone (1868). Opium is central to the plot. The moonstone of the title is a sacred Hindu diamond "‘growing and lessening in lustre with the waxing and waning of the moon". The gem is stolen by a laudanum-intoxicated thief who later remembers nothing of the crime.

Myers Literary Guide Centre for Northern Studies WILKIE COLLINS (1824 - 1889) Collins, who originally met Charles Dickens (q.v.) in John Forster's rooms in London, travelled round the North East on a theatrical tour with him, and appeared at the Old Assembly Rooms in Newcastle on 27 August 1852. He also wrote numerous articles and stories for Dickens' magazines. In 1861 he was in Whitby, accompanied by Caroline Graves, the inspiration for The Woman in White . He was actually working on his novel No Name , but was driven away by the noise of children and brass bands outside his hotel. The setting for his famous mystery The Moonstone (1868) is 'high up on the Yorkshire coast', referring to the map rather than the altitude. Whether the genesis of the novel, with its fabulous diamond, mysterious Indians and Holmes-like detective Sergeant Cuff can be linked to the presence in the area of the Maharajah Duleepsingh is a matter of conjecture. The Maharajah, a favourite of Queen Victoria, had been deprived of the Koh-i-Noor diamond by the British in India. Based at Mulgrave Castle, he was a keen hunter (and cormorant-fisher) on the North York Moors, and was often to be seen there with his native retinue between 1859 and 1863. Various guesses have been made as to the whereabouts of the Verinder house and lonely bay, locating them anywhere between Whitby and Middlesbrough. Runswick Bay may be the most likely spot. T.S. Eliot called
