  • A Bio-bibliographical note about Wilkie Collins
The eldest son of the landscape artist, William Collins R.A., Wilkie Collins was born in London in 1824. Educated for a few years at private schools in London, the family then moved to Italy when he was thirteen years old and it is here that he gained his real education. His first book, a biography of his father was published in 1848. A close friend and travelling companion to Charles Dickens, they spent a lot of time together during the 1850s. With the serialization of The Woman in White in 1860, Collins' popularity grew to such an extent that queues formed to buy the next instalment and Gladstone cancelled a theatre engagement to carry on reading it. He followed this success with the novels No Name Armadale (1866) and the highly successful The Moonstone Collins lived with his mother until he was thirty-two, then left to set up home with a young woman, Caroline Graves and her daughter by another man. Remaining with Caroline on and off for the rest of his life, he also fathered three illegitimate children by Martha Rudd. This scandalous arrangement led to Collins being ostracized by smart Victorian society.

    Prologue
    THE STORMING OF SERINGAPATAM (1799)
    (Extracted from a Family Paper)
I I ADDRESS these lines - written in India - to my relatives in England. My object is to explain the motive which has induced me to refuse the right hand of friendship to my cousin, John Herncastle. The reserve which I have hitherto maintained in this matter has been misinterpreted by members of my family whose good opinion I cannot consent to forfeit. I request them to suspend their decision until they have read my narrative. And I declare, on my word of honour, that what I am now about to write is, strictly and literally, the truth. The private difference between my cousin and me took its rise in a great public event in which we were both concerned - the storming of Seringapatam, under General Baird, on the 4th of May 1799. In order that the circumstances may be clearly understood, I must revert for a moment to the period before the assault, and to the stories current in our camp of the treasure in Jewels and gold stored up in the Palace of Seringapatam. II One of the wildest of these stories related to a Yellow Diamond - a famous gem in the native annals of India.

    55. William Collins R.A.
Much that is known about him comes from the two volume Memoirs of the Life ofWilliam Collins, Esq., RA by his son, the novelist Wilkie Collins (18241889)
    http://www.wilkiecollins.demon.co.uk/wilkiefamily/william.htm
    William Collins R.A.
William Collins R.A. was one of the best known artists of his time. He painted more than 200 major works and hundreds of minor ones. He was elected an associate member of the Royal Academy on 7 November 1814 and a full member in 1820 and, apart from two years in Italy, he exhibited there every year from 1807 until the year before his death in 1847. His patrons included King George IV, the Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, four Dukes, numerous other aristocrats, MPs, industrialists and members of the clergy. Despite his contemporary fame, he is now relatively unknown and his pictures are hard to find. Many of those that are in public collections are not on display and some of the finest are either lost or remain, perhaps unrecognised, in private hands. These pages bring together some of his work together with biographical material. Much that is known about him comes from the two volume Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A. by his son, the novelist Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) which was published in 1848. William's other son was the artist and writer Charles Allston Collins (1828-1873)
