British writer noted for his pioneering detective novels, including The Woman in White (1860) and The Moonstone Encyclopedia Collins, Wilkie (William Wilkie Collins), 1824–89, English novelist. Although trained as a lawyer, he spent most of his life writing, producing some 30 novels. He is best known for two mystery stories, The Woman in White (1860) and The Moonstone (1868), which are considered the first full-length detective novels in English and among the best of their genre; they helped to define the genre of literary melodrama which would peak at the end of the century. Collins's heroines are drawn with considerable clarity and sympathy. He was a friend of Dickens, in whose periodical Household Words many of Collins's novels first appeared. Bibliography See W. Baker and W. M. Clarke, ed.

    The Fiction of Wilkie Collins
The play based on The Moonstone The Moonstone: A Dramatic Story, in Three Acts This web site provides accurate texts of the novels and stories of Wilkie Collins (1824-1889). A close friend of Charles Dickens, Collins is one of the most readable (and surprisingly modern) of the Victorian novelists. Most of the works here are based on the New York Collier edition of 1900 , and are thus in the public domain. I have silently corrected obvious misspellings and typographical errors; however, no attempt has been made to force the spelling to conform either to British standards or to American ones. Plain text versions of many of these works have been donated to Project Gutenberg. The texts of Wilkie's most famous novels, The Woman in White and The Moonstone are available offsite. The short novel The Haunted Hotel is also offsite. With these three exceptions, this web site contains the complete fiction of Wilkie Collins, as well as the letters Charles Dickens wrote to Collins.
