Tom Collins
Some say that the Tom Collins was named after "Old Tom" Gin which is a sweetened gin used rarely today. Most older recipes call for "Old Tom". One 1912 recipe book lists a Tom Collins also with Dry Gin and Whiskey made the same way. It also has a recipe for one with Brandy in which calls for the addition of a dash or two of Maraschino. There are also accounts that it was named after the creator of the drink. England, Australia, and America have all laid claim. Here is an interesting tidbit from a viewer of Cocktails. Kevin Harrison's conversation with Vincent Collins "I met an elderly gentleman last night at a dinner party. His last name was Collins. He told me a very charming story about his grandfather who was born in 1850 and at the age of 23, worked in the garment district of NYC. To supliment his income he took a second job bartending at a tavern across the street from where he worked during the day. A place called the Whitehouse. His friends wanting something with less of a bite than strait whiskey asked him to make them something quenching. There he started pouring a "thirst quencher" made with gin that he had concocted. What started out as a gin & tonic evolved into a drink with lemon juice. His name was Tom Collins, supposedly this was where the Tom Collins drink originated."

Date: Tue Feb 27 2001 - 14:04:55 EST Hey...thank you ... I have looked at the Linux Trace Toolkit
and was wondering if such a thing could be done. I also
have visited the dprobes web site and that looked like
it had the mechanisms I was looking for.
Will the updated version appear next week at the dprobes
web site? I assume that it will.
I have one more question: My trace code is currently
implemented as a kernel loadable module. Would I need
to change that so that it is built as part of the kernel,
or can I keep it as a loadable module? If I can keep it as a module, I would ensure that the module would be the

British actress Pauline Collins repeats her stage success as the character Shirley Valentine , a married woman who decides in her middle years that she wants more out of life. Leaving her spouse behind, she heads to Greece, where she grows close to a low-key, local bloke (Tom Conti). Collins and director Lewis Gilbert (Educating Rita) choose to let the character, as she did in the play, speak directly to the audience at times, and the gamble works in terms of creating a gentle, intimate atmosphere. Conti is a bonus, a warm presence and funny to boot. Tom Keogh

She shoulda been a contender! I think Pauline Collins should have won an Oscar for this performance. She is so totally believable as Shirley , and the first time I saw this film I was 42 with the same life, the same husband and even the same wall. The film hit my soul so deeply that I pulled a "Shirley", and it shook my husband up so badly he put a poster of Greece right next to our bed to remind him that he could wake up alone one day. It is, and always will be my favorite film. I guess that we all wish to be the girl that we used to be. A rare treat Easily one of the most beautifully crafted movies I have ever seen.

Of the more than $7 million raised by legislative candidates, only 8.1 percent came from unidentified sources. Before the disclosure law passed, nearly 60 percent of the campaign contributions were unidentifiedlaundered through so-called “small” contributions or through political party PACs. The “small” contribution category accounted for the largest amount of campaign contributions in 1996—36 percent—but by lowering the reporting threshold amount from $500 to $100 it now accounts for only 3.5 percent of the total contributions. Every group/industry increased its percentage of identified campaign contributions from 1996 to 1998 (see charts below). Better disclosure laws allow newspapers and watch-dog groups to examine whether special interests’ campaign contributions influenced lawmakers’ decisions on legislation. PLAN’s next report, “Cashing-In” will study this issue in depth.

Katrina's Lesson - Can Networked People Make Government Irrelevant?
This is not a political message. I am going to make a point about how technology can help us collect and then connect the dots. Really. Read on. Indifference. Inaction. Incompetence. Irrelevance. The government response to the catastrophic natural disaster in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast has been an embarrassment to all Americans and an added injury to the people left for days to fend for themselves. It's not enough that those who claim to be public servants are running around telling us they couldn't have begun delivering food, water, and security forces to the center of New Orleans the day after the storm, while we watched news media and local workers reach the scene within hours after the eye of Katrina passed. No, those same indifferent, incompetent "public servants" are preventing private organizations from doing the work for them.

It was the happiest day in my 35 years when I returned to my lovely wife, Donnie and two wonderful sons, Marty (10) and Teddy (7), born after I was shot down - also my parents, two brothers, one sister and many friends to again enjoy life with them in this wonderful country. The concern for my plight demonstrated in so many ways by them, the people and government of the United States has overwhelmed me.
