MORRIS AND CHARLYNN SPENCER PYNE The Library of Congress played a prominent role during the spring 2000 meeting of the Coalition for Networked Information Task Force, held March 27-28 in Washington. The Library of Congress is a charter member of the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), which was established in 1990 by the Association of Research Libraries and EDUCAUSE "to advance the transformative promise of networked information technology for the advancement of scholarly communication and the enrichment of intellectual productivity." CNI's international task force of more than 200 institutional members, including libraries, library vendors, universities, publishers, and U.S. and foreign government agencies, meets each spring and fall for discussions of new technologies and library projects.

Director for Public Service Collections Diane Kresh said that the CDRS Project will provide professional reference service to users anytime, anywhere, through an international digital network of academic, special, public and national libraries. Through CDRS, users will have Internet access to library experts who draw on digital and nondigital resources to answer their queries.

Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) - Closing Plenary Wrapup - David Liroff
I have had some great opportunites over the past month or so to attend some interesting conferences, meetings, and training sessions. One of the trips was a short jaunt on the train down to Portland for the 2004 winter meeting of the Coalition for Networked Information (aka CNI) (tech aside - praise be to the genius who put power outlets on the train by each seat - but i just gotta ask - why only one? I am going to treat myself to a compact travel powerstrip for the new year). There were a variety of interesting talks as always - but this year seemed esepcially full of - something - electricity? energy? Not sure what it was, but the vibe seemed different - maybe people were sensing the impending announcement from Google. Anyways - I attended an interesting talk by David Lewis, "A Demand-Side View of the Future of Library Collections" , that touched on trends he has seen impacting his library's collection and what it could mean in the next 25 years for collections everywhere, even beyond academic libraries. An intersting discussion on what "shifts" in information formats and delivery "vehicles" could mean for a library's budget and also what patrons will be expecting. The couple of days in Portland - which if you ever get a chance to visit, I would highly recommend - was capped by listening to David Liroff - the Chief Technology Officer at WGBH. Below is portions of an e-mail form Cliff Lynch, the director of CNI, about the talk:

The Coalition for Networked Information
The Coalition for Networked Information organizes a series of projects involving digital technologies and the liberal arts. In developing relevant programs for scholarship and teaching, CNI addresses problems including electronic publishing, preservation of digital materials, supporting infrastructure for metadata, and computing in the humanities. NITLE has joined CNI through a special consortial arrangement that entitles its affiliated colleges to 16 representatives at CNI's twice-yearly Task Force Meetings (20 per meeting). Representatives are asked to provide NITLE with a brief report after each of these events, to assist us in assessing the Coalition's offerings and in promoting collaborative relationships.
