    ACRL/CNI Internet Education Project
    Project Goals
    This project intends to provide an effective method for librarians to display and share instructional materials that they have designed for teaching about seeking and evaluating information in a networked environment. It is the hope of the Committee that sharing these resources will assist librarians in responding to the challenge posed by digital technologies. The project:
    • solicits Internet guides, syllabi, and other materials designed for user education;
    • reviews the methodology, content, organization, currency, and use of technology of submitted materials;
    • shares those materials which receive excellent reviews;
    • collects and shares non-reviewed sites of interest to ALA/ACRL members.
    Project Background
    In June 1993, the Emerging Technologies in Instruction Committee (IS ETech) of the Instruction Section of ALA's Association of College and Research Libraries, began working on a project to disseminate instructional materials to the academic and research community pertaining to Internet user education.
    In June 1994, the IS ETech Committee released the report: "User Education for the Internet: Report and Recommendations," which described the results of a request for training materials, and made additional recommendations. A key recommendation of this report was that the Instruction Section establish an ongoing mechanism to identify excellent instructional programs and materials for teaching in the networked environment and work within ALA/ACRL and with CNI to maintain a suitable electronic resource of such information.

    http://www.lib.siu.edu/cni/
    This project, sponsored by the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) and the American Association of University Presses (AAUP) is a joint effort of Library Affairs , the University Press , and Information Technology at Southern Illinois University. Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) is one of thirteen institutions selected in December of 1993 to participate in this joint initiative. Library Affairs at SIUC and the SIU Press have a long history of cooperation, epitomized, perhaps, by the Press's publication the three volumes of Ralph E. McCoy's annotated Freedom of the Press bibliography. McCoy, now a resident of Blacksburg, Virginia, is Emeritus Dean of Library Affairs and is known internationally for both his achievements in librarianship and his First Amendment Freedoms scholarship. The private collection of First Amendment materials McCoy acquired in the course of his research is now a part of the First Amendment Freedoms research collection in the Library's Special Collections area and is used by scholars world-wide. Making the citations, annotations, and, where possible, full texts available via electronic networking is a goal which will aid scholarship, and, we believe, the Library and the Press. Please read important information about the Censorship creates an eternal crisis. In the present book

    Tell Mashnaqa
    Tell Mashnaqa is located at the Khabur, a tributary river to the Euphrates, about 30 kilometers south of Hassake in northeastern Syria. It is of moderarte size covering less than four hectares. To the west the mound rises to a height of more than 11 meters forming a so-called High Mound. The eastern part of the tell is a low and a flat mound, rising four meters above plain level. The total volume of the mound is calculated to c. 75,000 m³. The formation is built up of remains from several thousand years of human activities at the site, including habitation, burials and midden deposits. The high mound and the adjacent areas have been the target for archaeological investigations during the past ten years by a French and a Danish expedition. The Danish expedition concerned the oldest remains at the site belonging to the Ubaid period. During the Ubaid southern Mesopotamian culture for the first time spread into a vast geographical region reaching the Arabian Gulf in the southeast and the Syrian Mediterranean coast in the west. In the following millennia this culture developed into the better known Sumerian civilization. This homepage summarizes the results of the Danish arcaheological expedition to Tell Mashnaqa and presents the associated research projects and scientists. All the photos and drawings shown are described in the Slide Show and may be downloaded in a larger version by clicking on the image. These pictures are presented to the international society and may be used with citation of origin. Consider them as a gift from the people living at Tell Mashnaqa 7000 years ago.

    Gaia, Freedom, and Human Nature
    Some Ironies on the Way to Creating the
    Network of the Future.
    David Brin It is an honor to be invited to speak before such a distinguished gathering of champions for literacy. I have been asked, before beginning my own remarks, to comment on some of the statements made by my fellow speakers. First off, I am glad that Bruce Sterling and I agree about Benjamin Franklin, one of my principal heroes. My wife and I named our newborn son after him. Ben Franklin's life story is a lesson in humility for those of us with ambitions to grasp the culture around us. That culture is now much too vast and complicated for one person to encompass, or even adequately sample. Even in Franklin's day, it was already too complex for anyone but a great genius to span. He was the last person, I believe, who read all the great books of his time, had deep conversations with all of the great minds, and dated all the interesting women. It's too late now, even for a genius. Our culture is simply too enormous. Bruce also brought to mind something Garrett Hardin wrote about in his book

    The Community Nutrition Institute (CNI) is a national non-profit organization, founded in 1970, which provides information, education, and training on domestic and international food and nutrition concerns. What's New? CFNP Funding Restored by Senate Committee In action taken on July 14, 2005, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved fiscal year 2006 funding for the Community Food and Nutrition Program (CFNP) at last year’s funding level of $7.180 million. The vote came with approval of appropriations for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education. Consideration by the full Senate is expected in the near future, though no date has yet been set. In the same bill, the Committee also restored funding for the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) at $636.8 million next year.
    Following action by the full Senate, the Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill (H.R. 3010) will go to a House-Senate conference committee to resolve differences in funding levels between the two Houses. The House of Representatives provided no funding for the CFNP next year and also cut support for the CSBG down to $320 million as part of a June 24 vote on H.R. 3010. 2005 CFNP Competitive Grants Application Deadline Now Closed The deadline for applications for FY 2005 Community Food and Nutrition Program funding was June 17, 2005. Good luck to all applicants.
