Writings Putting People First Between Hope and History Consulting Editor Russell L. Riley, Miller Center of Public Affairs, University of Virginia Biography: A Life in Brief Road to the White House Bill Clinton, whose father died a few months before he was born, wanted to be President from a very early age. Born in 1946, he attended public schools in Hot Springs, Arkansas, after moving there from Hope. As a boy he was obsessed with politics, winning student elections at high school and later at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Work on a committee staff of Arkansas Senator William Fulbright and attendance at Oxford University as a Rhodes scholar strengthened his resolve for a political career. After graduating from Yale Law School, Clinton briefly taught law at the University of Arkansas. He ran for the United States House of Representatives and lost, in 1974, and then was elected state attorney general. In 1978, at the age of thirty-two, he became the youngest governor in the nation and in Arkansas history. After losing his bid for reelection, Clinton came back to win four terms, positioning himself for a shot at the Democratic nomination for President in 1992.

Bill Clinton
America's First Black President
In a 1998 essay in the New Yorker , author Toni Morrison described Clinton as "our first black president. Blacker than any actual person who could ever be elected in our children's lifetime." She went on to say: Clinton displays almost every trope of blackness: single-parent household, born poor, working-class, saxophone-playing, McDonald's -and-junk-food-loving boy from Arkansas. This is just another reason that the Republicans absolutely hated Clinton. "He's getting votes from the minorities just for being poor white trash fercrissakes!" He drove them utterly apeshit. The Republican leadership of the House could barely conceal their contempt for the man in their photo ops and press conferences. As far as they were concerned, Clinton was nothing more than a smarmy hick, the former governor of a backwater southern state, and corrupt as fuck. A guy that even had to lie about not inhaling In 1994, conservative religious whore Jerry Falwell released the straight-to-video documentary "The Clinton Chronicles: An Investigation into the Alleged Criminal Activities of Bill Clinton." The preacher aired excerpts from the tape on his weekly television show

Bill Clinton
William Jefferson Blythe, III was born in Hope, Arkansas on August 19th, 1946, three months after his father died in an automobile accident. When William was four years old, his mother married Roger Clinton, and the family moved to Hot Springs. William took the family name while in high school. After earning the selection as a delegate to the American Legion Boy's Nation program, Clinton met President John F. Kennedy in Washington, D.C., an event which sparked his interest in politics. Earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in International Affairs from Georgetown University in 1968, Clinton then attended Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship, studying government. He attended Yale University, earned a law degree, and then returned to Arkansas to teach law at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Clinton managed two important political campaigns – that of George S. McGovern, the Democratic Presidential nominee in 1972, and then Governor Jimmy Carter's run for the Presidency in 1976. During that time, Clinton married Hillary Rodham on October 11, 1975, and ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1974. In 1976, running unopposed for State Attorney General, Clinton was finally elected to a public office. This followed with the Governorship in 1978 where he served until 1980, and again from 1982 through 1986. From 1986 through 1987, Clinton served as chairman of the National Governors' Association. In 1991, he decided to run for President. He wanted to improve the health care system and strengthen the economy. After a long primary process, Clinton was nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate. Senator Al Gore, of Tennessee was chosen to be the vice-presidential running mate. Their campaign motto was "putting people first." On November 3rd, 1992, Clinton was elected as the forty-second President of the United States by forty-three percent of the popular vote.

Name at birth: William Jefferson Blythe Bill Clinton spent the 1970s as a law professor and then Attorney General of Arkansas, and most of the 1980s as Governor of Arkansas. A moderate Democrat, in 1992 he defeated the incumbent George Bush for the U.S. presidency. His first term was characterized by a strong economic recovery, and in 1996 he was re-elected. His second term was dominated by scandal: accusations of corruption and investigations into rumors of his marital infidelity. On December 19, 1998 the U.S. House of Representatives voted (along party lines) in favor of two articles of impeachment. Clinton was accused of committing perjury and obstruction of justice in his attempt to cover up an extra-marital affair with a White House intern, Monica Lewinsky . In the subsequent senate trial, Clinton was acquitted of the charges and remained in office. Days before leaving office, Clinton struck a deal with the office of the special prosecutor in the case: in order to avoid an indictment, Clinton admitted to making misleading testimony, and he was suspended from practicing law in Arkansas for five years. In 2000 his wife

Hope, Ark. William Jefferson Clinton was born William Jefferson Blythe IV in Hope, Ark., on Aug. 19, 1946. He was named for his father, who was killed in an automobile accident before Clinton's birth. Virginia Kelley, his mother, eventually married Roger Clinton, a car dealer, whose surname the future president later adopted. In high school in Hot Springs, Ark., Clinton considered becoming a doctor, but politics beckoned after a meeting with President John F. Kennedy in Washington, DC, on a Boys' Nation trip. He earned a BS in international affairs in 1968 at Georgetown University, having spent his junior year working for Arkansas senator J. William Fulbright. He was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford between 1968 and 1970. He then attended Yale Law School, where he met his future wife, Hillary Rodham, a Wellesley graduate. The couple has one child, Chelsea. In his second year, Clinton was faced with acrimonious battles over health care, welfare reform, and crime prevention. A health care reform package crafted by his wife failed to gain sufficient support. Clinton had to reduce his objective from massive overhaul to incremental reform.
