Biographie de Mark Twain :
Ecrivain américain, né dans le Missouri, romancier, humoriste et essayiste, dont le véritable nom est Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Orphelin de père à l’âge de 12 ans, Mark Twain exerce diverses activités : apprenti typographe, rédacteur d’articles dans le journal de son frère, pilote de bateau à vapeur sur le Mississipi. Ne voulant pas se battre au côté des sudistes pour le maintien de l’esclavage, il s’enfuit vers les montagnes du Névada et devient chercheur d’or. A partir de 1864, il exerce l’activité de reporter à San Francisco et se déplace en Europe en tant que correspondant de presse. Après son mariage avec Olivia Langdon en 1870, il s’installe à Hartford, Connecticut.
Dans ses premiers romans, Mark Twain évoque ses voyages en Europe et en Polynésie (Les innocents à l'étranger, 1869) en se moquant des préjugés et de la conduite de ses compatriotes, ainsi que sa période de chercheur d’or (A la dure !, 1872). C’est grâce à ses deux romans "Les aventures de Tom Sawyer" (1876) et "Les aventures d'Huckleberry Finn" (1885) qu’il acquiert la célébrité comme écrivain humoriste. Mark Twain écrit cependant, dans la seconde partie de son oeuvre des textes plus graves dénonçant avec pessimisme les excès de la civilisation et l’immoralité érigée en morale. La fin de sa vie est assombrie par des ennuis financiers ainsi que par la mort de l’une de ses filles, puis de sa femme.
Décrivant avec réalisme et sévérité la société américaine, Mark Twain est l’un des premiers auteurs à utiliser la langue parlée authentique des Etats du Sud et de l’Ouest. Souvent comparé à Stevenson et Dickens, il excelle particulièrement dans une peinture régionaliste de l’Amérique, c’est-à-dire réalisée par un "natif", parfaitement imprégné du vécu de l’endroit qu’il décrit. Une partie importante de son œuvre déroge cependant à ce principe lorsqu’il se fait "observateur des peuples" en plaçant ses récits dans les pays qu’il a visités.
