Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain)
Born:  Florida, Missouri; November 30, 1835
Died:  Redding, Connecticut; April 21, 1910 While not of Connecticut, Samuel Clemens was certainly the most celebrated popular author resident in Connecticut in the late nineteenth century. As a resident of Hartford from the early 1870s to the early 1890s, Clemens produced his most noted works: Roughing It The Gilded Age (1873), with Charles Dudley Warner, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer A Tramp Abroad The Prince and the Pauper Life on the Mississippi The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884); and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court The amazing literary productivity of Clemens during his Hartford years can be traced to a number of elements. First of all, the Clemens who came to Hartford was able to draw upon a wealth of material he had accumulated as a youngster in the village of Hannibal on the Mississippi River; as a printer in Iowa, St. Louis, Philadelphia, and New York City; as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi-from whence the pen name “Mark Twain,” a call on riverboats when sounding water depths; as a miner in Nevada; as a newspaperman with the

  • A Bio-bibliographical note about Mark Twain (Samuel L. Clemens)
"Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in Missouri in November 1835. His family settled in Hannibal, a small township on the Mississippi. After his father's death in 1847 Clemens left school to become a printer's apprentice, working on the Missouri Courier. From 1853 he travelled widely as a journeyman printer in the East and Middle West, but gave this up in 1857 in favour of becoming a steamboat pilot after a trip down the Mississippi. "The outbreak of Civil War in 1861 brought an end to all river traffic and Clemens went on to spend time as an army volunteer, a gold prospector in Nevada, a timber prospector and a journalist. He first adopted the pseudonym 'Mark Twain' (a boating term meaning two fathoms) in 1863, as the signature to a humorous travel letter. His first major book, The Innocents Abroad based on his travels in Europe and the Holy Lands appeared in 1869.

American writer, journalist, humorist, who won a worldwide audience for his stories of youthful adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Sensitive to the sound of language, Twain introduced colloquial speech into American fiction. Samuel Clemens Mark Twain was the pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, b. Florida, Mo., Nov. 30, 1835, d. Apr. 21, 1910, who achieved worldwide fame during his lifetime as an author, lecturer, satirist, and humorist. Since his death his literary stature has further increased, with such writers as Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner declaring his worksparticularly Huckleberry Finna major influence on 20th-century American fiction. Twain was raised in Hannibal, Mo., on the Mississippi River. His writing career began shortly after the death of his father in 1847. Apprenticed first to a printer, he soon joined his brother Orion's Hannibal Journal, supplying copy and becoming familiar with much of the frontier humor of the time, such as George W. Harris's Sut Lovingood yarns and other works of the so-called Southwestern Humorists. From 1853 to 1857, Twain visited and periodically worked as a printer in New York, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Cincinnati, corresponding with his brother's newspapers under various pseudonyms. After a visit to New Orleans in 1857, he learned the difficult art of steamboat piloting, an occupation that he followed until the Civil War closed the river, and that furnished the background for "Old Times on the Mississippi" (1875), later included in the expanded Life on the Mississippi (1883).

Biography Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. This boy would later become known for his philosophical and witty remarks as well as for his lush and tasteful world-renowned works of writing. Throughout his adult life Twain went in and out of New York for varying amounts of time. This is evidence of his lust for travel, which is also expressed through many of his books. He got his pen name when he spent two-and-a-half years as a riverboat captain. 'Mark Twain' is a term used to mark safe waters or twelve fathoms. This part of his life impacted on him so much so that he began calling himself Mark Twain, after the riverboat term. All of his books were published under this name, yet some of his earlier articles are written under his real name, Sam Clemens. Twain's father, John Marshall Clemens, worked as a professional lawyer, and some say, also a merchant. John had brought Twain's three older siblings, Henry, Pamela, and Orion, to Florida, Missouri from Jamestown, Tennessee. Twain's mother, Jane Clemens, gave birth to him in Florida as the Haley's Comet arrived and just five months after the family moved and after John had established a small business. Yet within four years John decided to leave Florida for the more promising Mississippi River town of Hannibal, Missouri. One of Twain's most famous books
