CLAY, HENRY
, statesman. Leader of the Whig party and five times an unsuccessful presidential candidate, Clay played a central role on the stage of national politics for over forty years. He was secretary of state under John Quincy Adams, Speaker of the House of Representatives longer than anyone else in the nineteenth century, and the most influential member of the Senate during its golden age. In a parliamentary system, he would have undoubtedly become prime minister. Clay's personal magnetism made him one of America's best-loved politicians; his elaborate scheming made him one of the most cordially hated. Through it all he displayed remarkable consistency of purpose: he was a nationalist, devoted to the economic development and political integration of the United States. As Speaker of the House in 1812, Clay was one of the "War Hawks," men who believed that war with Great Britain was necessary to preserve the overseas markets of American staple producers. But Clay also served as a negotiator at the Ghent peace conference, and for the rest of his life pursued conciliation at home and abroad. Although a slaveholder, Clay disapproved of slavery as a system; he advocated gradual emancipation and the resettlement of the freed people in Africa. He defended, unsuccessfully, the right of the so-called Five Civilized Tribes of Indians to their lands. He warned that annexation of Texas would provoke war with Mexico and exacerbate tensions between North and South, and he opposed the war when it came. He consistently fostered good relations with Latin America.

, Speaker of the House . Although leader of the War Hawks in Congress who urged war against England in 1812, Clay helped negotiate the peace and signed the Treaty of Ghent in 1814. Known as the "Great Compromiser," Clay, who came from the border state of Kentucky, helped negotiate the Missouri Compromise in 1820, the Compromise Tariff in 1833, and the Compromise of 1850 . His repeated efforts to settle disputes over slavery through compromise delayed civil war but ultimately failed. Clay served as secretary of state under John Quincy Adams, as Speaker of the House of Representatives, and as an influential member of the U.S. Senate. Historians rank him one of the five great U.S. senators of all time. Clay, who made five attempts to receive the presidential nomination of the National Republican party (later Whig party), captured it three times but lost to John Quincy Adams in the election of 1824 , Andrew Jackson in the election of 1832 , and James K. Print Preview of Section Clay, Henry (1777-1852), American statesman, who was secretary of state under John Quincy Adams and an unsuccessful candidate for the presidency in 1824, 1832, and 1844. He was one of the most popular and influential political leaders in American history. His genius in the art of compromise three times resolved bitter political conflicts that threatened to tear the nation apart, winning him the title The Great Pacificator. Clay was born on April 12, 1777, in Hanover County, Virginia, to a middle-class family. After studying for the bar with the eminent George Wythe, Clay, at the age of 20, moved to Lexington, Kentucky, where he developed a thriving practice. He was blessed with a quick mind, a flair for oratory, and an ability to charm both sexes with his easy, attractive manner. That he loved to drink and gamble was no drawback in an age that admired both vices. Clay, ambitious for worldly success, married into a wealthy and socially prominent family and soon gained entry into Kentucky's most influential circles. While still in his 20s, he was elected to the state legislature, in which he served for six years, until 1809.

    HENRY CLAY
CLAY, HENRY (1777-1852), American statesman and orator, was born in Hanover county, Virginia, on the 12th of April 1777, and died in Washington on the 29th of June 1852. Few public characters in the United States have been the subject of more heated controversy. His enemies denounced him as a pretender, a selfish intriguer, and an abandoned profligate; his supporters placed him among the sages and sometimes even among the saints. He was an arranger of measures and leader of political forces, not an originator of ideas and systems. His public life covered nearly half a century, and his name and fame rest entirely upon his own merits. He achieved his success despite serious obstacles. He was tail, rawboned and awkward; his early instruction was scant; but he read books, talked well, and so, after his admission to the bar at Richmond, Virginia, in 1797, and his removal next year to Lexington, Kentucky, he quickly acquired a reputation and a lucrative income from his law practice. From the beginning of his career he was in favor of internal improvements as a means of opening up the fertile but inaccessible West, and was opposed to the abuse of official patronage known as the spoils system. The most important of the national questions with wl~ch Clay was associated, however, were the various phases of slavery politics and protection to home industries. The most prominent characteristics of his public life were his predisposition to compromises and pacifications which generally failed of their object, and his passionate patriotic devotion to the Union.
