He gained international fame when his book " On War " was posthumously published by his wife in 1832. "On War" is a three-volume masterpiece. In this book, he reduced military operations to a science. Most of all, Clausewitz related war to politics, stating that "war is a political act that should be directed by the political leaders of a nation." Clausewitz impressive qualifications included serving in the campaigns in the Rhineland in 1793-94. During the Napoleonic Wars in 1806, he was in the Jena campaign. He served from 1812-1814 in the Russian Army against Napoleon and after re-entering the Prussian Army, fought at Waterloo. Clausewitz became the military instructor of the Prussian Crown Prince and Departmental Chief in the Ministry of War. He also assisted in reorganizing the Prussian Army. He was Director of Military Academy in Berlin. The book under review is a Pelican abridged edition, with Introduction by Anatol Rapoport. This means that the three-volume masterpiece was edited and that some portions had been excluded. However, it followed the text of the New and Revised Edition of Col. J.J. Graham's translation, which first appeared in 1908.
