Abstract
From the Paper:

"In order to understand the extent of the achievement of Baron von Steuben, the condition and the working of the soldiers during a war or battle in the eighteenth century must be understood. Warfare in those days was a general free-for-all wherein the emphasis was on firing as quickly as possible, and at the closest ranges possible. It was, in fact, a mass fire combat, where the soldier on one side would find it of utmost importance to fire before the soldier on the opposite side could; he would always try to get the first shot across, before the other could. The rules and regulations for the soldiers were dealt primarily with drill, and firing arms. The sole emphasis was on the conduction of drills for the soldiers whereby they would become more and more proficient at handling the arms, and it would finally become nothing that would take up any sort of effort of concentration; the process of loading and firing a firearm would become totally automatic."

Clausewitz Condensed
Introduction
Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831) was a Prussian soldier and scholar during and after the Napoleonic wars, an age in which Clausewitz said, "War itself...had been lecturing." / Despite the fact that his writings remained unfinished at the time of his death, his study On War is "the first" to grapple with "the fundamentals of its subject, and the first to evolve a pattern of thought adaptable to every stage of military history and practice." / The extent to which Clausewitz endures today, in an era of nuclear weaponry and "Star Wars" defense projects, attests to the success of his systematic attempt to describe war's universal dynamics. Indeed, American strategist Bernard Brodie, like many other military authorities, believes that On War "is not simply the greatest but the only truly great book on war." What explains the durability of Clausewitzian thought? The key lies in the fundamentally persistent nature of war, for it is the fundamentally timeless aspect of war that most strikes the modern reader of On War . Clausewitz views war more as an art than a science. One can no more establish a rigid manual for combat, Clausewitz thinks, than one can define strict principles for great painting.

  • Carl von Clausewitz was Prussian soldier and military theorist. Clausewitz entered the Prussian army at the age of 12. In 1806, during the Napoleonic Wars, the French in the Jena campaign captured Clausewitz. After being exchanged as a prisoner two years later, he returned to Prussia, where he became the military instructor of the prince and departmental chief in the ministry of war: he also assisted in reorganizing the army. Clausewitz served in the Russian army against Napoleon and, after reentering the Prussian army, fought at Waterloo. In 1818 Clausewitz was made a major general, and he was director of the War College in Berlin. Clausewitz gained international fame as a military theorist with his posthumously published three-volume masterpiece On War. In these volumes he related war to politics, stating that war is a political act that should be directed by the political leaders of the nation: and he reduced military operations to a science.

34. CLAUSEWITZIAN FRICTION AND FUTURE WAR

McNair Paper Number 52, Chapter 1, October 1996
CLAUSEWITZIAN FRICTION AND FUTURE WAR
THE ONCE AND FUTURE PROBLEM OF GENERAL FRICTION
Clausewitz's earliest known use of the term "friction" to "describe the effect of reality on ideas and intentions in war" occurred in a 29 September letter written to his future wife, Marie von Brhhl, less than 3 weeks before France defeated Prussia at the twin battles of Jena and Auerstadt on 14 October 1806. (Note 1) By the time Clausewitz died in 1831, his original insight regarding friction's debilitating effects on the campaign of 1806 had grown into a central theme of the unfinished manuscript that his widow published as Vom Kriege [On War]. (Note 2) American military officers today most often refer to Clausewitz's unified concept of a general friction (Gesamtbegriff einer allgemeinen Friktion) as the "fog and friction" of war. (Note 3) The diverse difficulties and impediments to the effective use of military force that those possessing military experience instinctively associate with this phrase are generally acknowledged to have played significant roles in most, if not all, of the wars since Clausewitz's time. Even in a conflict as inundated with technically advanced weaponry as the 1991 Persian Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm), there was no shortage of friction at any level, tactical, operational, strategic, or even political. Indeed, close examination of Desert Storm suggests that frictional impediments experienced by the winning side were not appreciably different in scope or magnitude than they were for the Germans during their lightning conquest of France and the Low Countries in May 1940.

The Hall of Warriors
Enter this electronic Valhalla for timeless lessons in organizational leadership from the masters of the art of war. You enter the grounds and follow the Path of Victory. Some people call this path Bushido, the Way of the Warrior. Others know it as Kshatriya Dharma, the Right Conduct of the Warrior and King. As you walk toward the Hall of Warriors, you are greeted by statues of Victory and Pallas Athena. Image credits As you approach the gate, Livius and Flavius salute you: "Hail, visitor! All who follow the Path of Victory are welcome here!" You enter the hall to find a man with a grey cloak and a white beard. He wears a patch over one eye, and is accompanied by two ravens and two wolves. Odin, the Scandinavian god of war, presides over the Hall of Warriors. He carries the lance Gungnir: "This spear is the foundation of my power, the power of any leader. I cut its shaft from Yggdrasill, the World Ash Tree, the foundation of the world's order. The runes on the shaft speak of truth to pacts, of absolute trustworthiness. There is an underlying foundation to every organization, every society, every human endeavor. We Westerners call it Natural Law. The Indians call it Dharma, or Right Conduct. The Chinese call it Tao, and the Japanese call it Do: the Way. This is what I, Odin, call Yggdrasill, the World Ash Tree. The leader's authority comes from Natural Law, Dharma, or Tao."
"Natural Law is the foundation of the United States Constitution. It is also the keystone of what Dr. Stephen R. Covey calls Principle-Centered Leadership .The nation's founders created an organization, the United States, to serve its citizens. They specified the nation's purpose in the Preamble to the Constitution. Stephen Covey writes (1991, 292), "The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of our country define what we're about, what we're trying to achieve, and why." This is the United States' special heritage. It is not an accident of geography, language, or colonization, but an organization with a purpose. "This was the first nation in the world that was ever established on the basis of reason instead of warfare" (Campbell, 1988, 31)."

        Abstract:
In this article I claim that Leibniz's 1670 preface to a sixteenth-century text on rhetoric by Marius Nizolius offers a historical perspective on the relationship between figurative language and performativity in philosophical discourse. To begin with, although Leibniz argues in the Preface to Nizolius against the use of rhetoric, eloquence, and specifically tropes in philosophical discourse, nevertheless his prescriptions for philosophical clarity implicate a "channel of tropes" in what could be described as a retroactive, performative assignation of proper usage. Moreover, the example that Leibniz supplies to illustrate the channel of tropes, namely a tropological account by which the Latin past participle
