Mormonism - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS)
Welcome to a look at Mormonism. In the background (if you have a sound card on your computer and have a "midi" music plug-in like Quicktime ) you should be hearing a popular hymn called "O God, Our Help In Ages Past," from the Mormon Hymnal. Ever wondered what Mormons believe? You've probably seen the white-shirted guys riding bikes around your neighborhood and the Church-produced television commercials offering free Bibles. We have a hint that they place great importance on frugality, the family and family life. But what else do they believe? It is not often easy to find out the full complexity of the beliefs and teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and how these beliefs differ significantly from orthodox Christianity. Photo: Mormon Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (some don't like it to be called the Mormon Church, but an unofficial adopted name of the members is the Mormons) has claimed about 4.8 million members in the U.S. Fifty-three percent are women. This would amount to a little less than 2% of the U.S. population or about 1 of every 50 people. However, the church probably is counting everyone who ever joined, but has no record of those who leave the church and don't get their names removed, or just stop attending church. My guess is that the church has considerably less actual attending members than they claim. Of the members, it has been estimated that somewhere between 10 and 30% of Mormons hold a "temple recommend" which allows them to enter the Temples where secret ceremonies such as baptisms for the dead ancestors, and marriage ceremonies are held for those with "temple recommends".

Mormonism - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Part 2)
Ever wondered what Mormons believe? From the Church-produced television commercials we have a hint that they place great importance on the family and family life. But what else do they believe? It is not often easy to find out the full complexity of the beliefs and teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Here are the teachings of the LDS church as compiled primarily from the Book of Mormon Student Manual (1989), the Doctrine and Covenants Student Manual (1981), and the Book of Mormon (1989), all published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah. Photo: Mormon Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah Here's Part 2 of Mormon beliefs (page references to the Book of Mormon Student Manual):
  • The Church teaches that the "Kingdom of God" refers only to the Celestial Kingdom, the highest heaven where only Mormons who have fully repented of sins, and married in the Temple will go (and small children who die before age eight.)
  • The Church teaches that "Eternal Life" means becoming a god through exaltation and living in the Celestial Kingdom with God, which only perfect sinless married Mormons can do. Marriages must take place in the Mormon Temple to gain the Celestial Kingdom.

History of the Mormons - Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
Brief Mormon overview of the historical beginnings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and its founds Joseph Smith.
What are the beginnings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints? The official formation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is considered to be April 6, 1830. The route leading up to that formation is fascinating and insightful as concerns this rapidly growing religious denomination. All discussion of the origin of this Christian church has to begin with Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder. Born December 23, 1805 in Sharon, Vermont, Joseph Smith, Jr. was the third of nine children born to Joseph Smith, Sr. and Lucy Smith. The Smiths lived in Vermont until Joseph was about fourteen, when the family moved to Palmyra, New York. Being farmers, Joseph was soon busy clearing trees and stumps to prepare areas for planting crops. In the spring of 1820, Joseph Smith describes in his personal history a growing excitement concerning religion in general in the region. Four of Joseph's family joined the Presbyterian faith, namely his mother, two of his brothers and a sister. Joseph himself was leaning toward the Methodists but he declined to formally join that faith. Joseph relates how a certain passage in the New Testament struck him with great force. In James chapter 1, verse 5 he read: "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him," (Bible King James Version). Joseph decided to take this verse as a direct invitation from God to pray. He went to a nearby grove of trees and knelt down to pray and ask God which church was right, which church he should join. Joseph Smith states in his history that in a vision he was visited by God the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ, who told him to join none of the churches. He recounts that they stood in the air above him and told him many things.

eBook Summary:
The Book of Mormon is a record of God's dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains, as does the Bible, the fullness of the everlasting gospel. It is a volume of scripture that is to many, comparable to the Bible, and to others, a companion to the Bible.
The Book of Mormon was written by many ancient prophets in the spirit of prophecy and revelation. Their words, written on gold plates, were quoted and abridged by a prophet-historian named Mormon. The crowning event recorded in the Book of Mormon is the personal ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ among the Nephites soon after his resurrection. It puts forth the doctrines of the gospel, outlines the plan of salvation, and tells men what they must do to gain peace in this life and eternal salvation in the life to come.
In time the golden plates were delivered to Joseph Smith, who translated them by the gift and power of God. The record is now published in many languages as a new and additional witness that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God and that all who will come unto him and obey the laws and ordinances of his gospel may be saved.
