The Anchorage Alaska Temple
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
The second of the new small temples, Anchorage incorporates several new features. For example, the Angel Moroni on the Monticello Temple is white, durring overcast days the statue seems to disappear because of its unobtrusive color. For the Anchorage Temple the Angel Moroni is gold as in all other temples. To give the temple an Alaskan feel the west wall includes several star stones set in the pattern of the Big Dipper. This constellation is important for two reasons. Since the Big Dipper points to the north star, and hence represents northern lands, it was used in the Alaskan state flag. Its pointing to the north star, which is the only fixed star in the sky, also symbolizes pointing the way to truth, and as such it is part of the symbolism on the exterior of the Salt Lake Temple. Also, stylized evergreen trees are seen on most of the doors, forget-me-nots, the Alaska State flower, decorate the Sealing Room, and the altars are decorated with Native American influenced designs. The temple was announced in October 1997.

About Temple Square Often referred to as the "Crown Jewel" of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , Temple Square is part of the central campus of the LDS Church (also referred to as the "Mormon Church"), and serves not only as a cultural center for the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, but also as the most popular tourist attraction in the state of Utah. Most prominent among the six buildings on Temple Square is the Salt Lake Temple , whose neo-Gothic exterior is a widely-recognized symbol of the devotion of the early Mormon pioneers, and whose interior, to the surprise of many, contains no pipe organs. Almost as prominent is the domed, "turtle-back" roof of the

THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS ADDRESS : 50 East North Temple Street Salt Lake City, Utah 84150 OTHER NAMES : Latter-day Saints, LDS LEADER : Gordon B. Hinckley, Prophet and President CURRENT MEMBERSHIP : At the close of 1999, the church reported over 11 million members in over 17,305 congregations worldwide. The church is now organized in 128 nations and territories and has over 65,000 full-time missionaries serving in 228 missions around the world. HISTORICAL ROOTS : Organized during the period of unrest and "revival" in the U.S. during the 1800s. Joseph Smith, Jr., uncertain as to which of the various Protestant denominations was the true church, prayed for divine insight. In answer to this prayer, God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him to inform him that none were right, but that the fullness of the gospel would be revealed to him in the future. Later, the Angel Moroni delivered to him an ancient record, on gold plates, containing the history and religious teachings of a people who had migrated from Jerusalem to America some 600 years before Christ. These people, believed by the Mormons to be forefathers of at least some of the American Indians, had recorded their religious experiences, including a record of their encounter with the resurrected Christ. These were translated and published by Joseph Smith, Jr., and are known as The Book of Mormon . The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was formally organized on April 6, 1830, in the home of Peter Whitmer in Fayette, New York, by Joseph Smith, Jr., and five others. Joseph Smith, Jr., was the first President of the Church. From New York, the Mormons moved to the Midwest. Expelled from Illinois, they were led by Brigham Young, the second President of the Church, to the basin of the Great Salt Lake.

Introduction
Print Preview of Section Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , major world religion of 12 million members, established in 1830 by Joseph Smith , known as the prophet. Followers of this religion are called Mormons. From a handful of members at the beginning, the movement has grown steadily through proselytizing and a relatively high birth rate. By the early 2000s there were 5.5 million Mormons in the United States and the number in other countries around the world totaled about 6.5 million. Before World War II conversions had been most numerous in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Scandinavia, but during recent years the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has grown rapidly in developing countries. In Mexico, for example, there were 850,000 Mormons in 2000, most of them converted since 1975. In South Korea, the Latter-day Saints had no adherents before 1950, but by 2000 there were 71,000 members. A vigorous missionary program—a rotating force of about 60,000 preaching Mormon doctrine in more than 330 missions in the United States and abroad—assures a steady influx of new members.

Worship and Activities
Worship is simple, consisting of hymns, prayers, the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper (celebrated with bread and water), and sermons delivered by lay members of the congregation. Auxiliary organizations for children, teenagers, and women provide additional activities and service projects. In temples—of which more than 115 exist throughout the world—vicarious ordinance work is performed, in which Mormons of certified faithfulness act as proxy for dead ancestors, and marriages between devout Mormons are consecrated “for time and all eternity.” In addition to their vigorous missionary program, Mormons are well known for their welfare program, an organized effort to provide for those in need, and for their Word of Wisdom, a code of health prohibiting tea, coffee, alcohol, and tobacco. The church also supports the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and

(supposedly) by Joseph Smith This 'official history' of the early LDS Church is edited from the Utah church's viewpoint. Although the church hasn’t officially denounced this history as being written by someone other than Joseph Smith, the fact is that much of it was not written by him and most of it was put together after he was dead. The early church historians did many creative things with this history including adding prophecies attributable to Joseph Smith that had been “fulfilled” after his death. (Hmmmm... seems like the early Christians did the same thing The early historians also censored much of the material to make it more “faith promoting”. This history would still be very disturbing (although few active members have bothered to read it) in the eyes of most Mormons who are only familiar with the typical “Sunday School” sanitized version of the church’s supposed spotless history. This 7 volume set read in conjunction with the Quinn Newell books will give you a fairly accurate look at the beginnings of Mormonismfar more so then if you look to your seminary teacher, gospel doctrine class or

Today on the Exchange we’ll learn more about the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints... its history, its beliefs and where you see its influence in New England today. Laura's guests are Jan Shipps, Professor of History and Religious Studies at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis and author of "Mormonism: The Story of a New Religious Tradition". My Testimony and Beliefs I know that Jesus Christ lives and he loves each one of us. Our Heavenly Father loves us too. We all make mistakes and that is why Jesus Christ died for us so we may be able to return to live with our Heavenly Father once more. I know I will be with my family forever if we do what is right. I also know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God and was translated by Joseph Smith, a prophet of God. There is also a living PROPHET today, President Gorden B. Hinckley. We can talk to God, but a prophet can talk to God and hear his word for all of us. This is the way we know what he wants us to do as his children.
Added 11/13/01
I have been reading The Book of Mormon everyday since November 6, 2001 and I have been closer to my Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. It was hard to do before but now I want to read it everyday. It helps you live a better life and want to do the things Our Heavenly Father wants me to do. Read it and you will find that out for yourself.
