Ireland's OWN: History
Erskine Childers
(autobiographical - 17 Nov. 1922)
After they had made use of him for years, leaned on his gifts and fidelity and asked Irish voters to elect him as their representative in Dáil Éireann "I wish to make this statement in view of the mass of prejudice which has gathered about me owing to false statement and calumnies, and innuendoes which have been made about me in the press and elsewhere for a year past, and to most of which I have been unable to reply. I am making no appeal — let that be clear. Whatever befalls I shall suffer gladly and happily, but I think its due to me, and above all to the cause I represent which has been traduced and slandered through the agency of attacks on me, to make some refutation of these attacks. "I have constantly been called an Englishman who having betrayed his own country came to Ireland to betray and destroy Ireland, a double traitor. Alternatively, I have suffered the vile charge or innuendo that instead of betraying England I have been acting as a spy or agent provocateur of Englishmen seeking to destroy Ireland in England's interest. Not a single particle of proof has ever been brought forward for those charges. They depend solely on prejudice fostered by a pitilessly bitter propaganda and intended more, I think, to damage the Republican party through me than me myself.

Born into a Protestant family, he was a clerk in the House of Commons (1895–1910). Gradually becoming convinced of the need for Irish Home Rule, he resigned to work for it, engaging in gun-running for the Irish Volunteers in 1914. After serving in the British forces during World War I, he represented the Irish cause at Versailles and was a member of the Irish delegation that negotiated the treaty with Britain (1921). By this time he was opposed to anything other than republic status for Ireland and urged rejection of the treaty. He fought in the Irish Republican Army in the civil war that followed the creation of the Irish Free State, and was court-martialed and shot as a traitor in 1922. Childers wrote on Irish politics and on military matters, but his best-known work is Riddle of the Sands (1903, repr. 1971), a spy novel. His son

Erskine Childers
Robert Erskine Childers was shot by an Irish Free State firing squad Nov. 24, 1922, after being convicted of having a small pistol. He had been one of the leaders, with Eamon de Valera, of the Irish Republican Army rebellion against the Free State leadership of Michael Collins and Arthur Griffith. His son, Erskine Hamilton Childers, was president of Ireland in 1973-4. Childers, shown here in a photo around the time of the Boer War, was a cousin of Hugh Childers, who served Gladstone as First Lord of the Admiralty and Minister of War. As a clerk in the House of Commons, Erskine Childers had free time to sail on his 30-foot cutter Vixen (which must have been the prototype for Dulcibella ) including to the Baltic and Friesland Islands. After a tour in his larger yacht, Sunbeam, Childers wrote The Riddle of the Sands, in 1903. Although the book was not published until 1915 in the United States, Childers in 1903 traveled to the United States, where he met and married Mollie Osgood, daughter of a Boston physician. They had a 50-foot ketch, Asgard
