October 19, 2001 John Carroll University's Institute of Catholic Studies Presents
"An Evening with G.K. Chesterton" What: Dr. John C. Chalberg is a professional historian-actor and Fulbright Lecturer who will bring G.K. Chesterton, (1874-1936) to life on stage on the campus of John Carroll University on November 1, 2001. G.K. Chesterton is one of the most quotable and least remembered of early twentieth century British writers. A figure larger then life, Chesterton was an essayist, novelist, mystery writer, poet, playwright and staunch anti-modernist. Chalberg's performance of Chesteron takes the audience on a journey across the Atlantic from England to the U.S., to offer his own unique views on everything from the virtues of things small, whether they be families or pubs, to the evils of things large, from imperialist schemes to socialist states. Who: Dr. Chalberg holds a Ph.D. in American History and has taught at the college level for many years. Throughout his teaching career, he has brought many historical personages to his classroom, including Teddy Roosevelt, Patrick Henry and Huey Long. A Minnesotan by birth and an historian by training, Chalberg has traveled the United States and Canada for a number of years as Teddy Roosevelt, H.L. Mencken and Branch Rickey. Chesterton is his most recent addition to his stable of characters. Where/When November 1, 2001, 7:30 p.m., D.J Lombardo Student Center, Conference Room

G.K. Chesterton on The Gathering Storm
by Joe Katzman at May 16, 2002 02:46 AM Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) was one of the leading literary and figures in England during the first third of the 20th century, and a significant influence on both T.S. Eliot and C.S. Lewis. His array of apt quotes is profound, and one in particular seems apt for these times. Thanks to G.K.'s blog for the following quote:
"Anarchy is that condition of mind or methods in which you cannot stop yourself. It is the loss of that self-control which can return to the normal. It is not anarchy because men are permitted to begin uproar, extravagance, experiment, peril. It is anarchy when people cannot end these things.... It is not anarchy to have a picnic; but it is anarchy to lose all memory of mealtimes.... It is this inability to return within rational limits after a legitimate extravagance that is the really dangerous disorder. The modern world is like Niagara. It is magnificent, but it is not strong. It is as weak as water - like Niagara. The objection to a cataract is not that it is deafening or dangerous or even destructive, it is that it cannot stop. Now it is plain that this sort of chaos can possess the powers that rule a society as easily as the society so ruled." This, to me, is a tremendously apt summation of the danger of our times.

Distributism
by Carol DeBoer-Langworthy Now almost forgotten, Distributism was a composite of several social and moral theories first articulated by Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) and Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953) in the pages of volume 2 of The New Age. The initial concepts arose from the four-way (and more) argument among H.G.Wells, George Bernard Shaw, Belloc and Chesterton over modernity that began with Belloc’s "Thoughts on Modern Thought" (02:108). Although probably initially stage-managed by Orage, the debate became a messy, two-year-long wrangle that engaged many readers until the discussion petered out in 1909. That discussion, now known as "the Chesterbelloc" contoversy, helped Belloc and Chesterton develop a rationale for equitable distribution of property and restoration of worker control in commerce, agriculture, and industry. This cluster of ideas, soon called "Distributism," was based on the two men’s look back, to European history, as well as their concerns about the present and the future of mass industrial society. Their ideas were not especially daring or innovative, but rather were built on what they felt had worked in the past. Calling for a return to the Christian social conscience, Distributism warned against the trend toward dehumanizing state control of society and for the efficacy of the self-contained organic community. This restoration of society to a human, organic scale was to be accomplished through a return to a social system not unlike medieval guilds small units organized according to natural economic classes and productive functions. The idea was to create a balanced or mixed economy of independent farmers and small industries owned and operated by the workers themselves, thus creating a sort of peasant-worker state. The Roman Catholic Church was to provide whatever federal and international control might be needed. Independent, small farming was to be the backbone of this society based on decentralized control, self-sufficiency, and rural reconstruction.

(Gilbert Keith) Chesterton (1874-1936) was one of the deepest thinkers who ever existed, according to Etienne Gilson, a prominent 20th-century Thomistic philosopher. Having struggled with Skepticism as a young man, GKC converted to Christianity around the turn of the century, and soon became one the most fascinating and compelling defenders of the Faith the Christian world had ever known. In his masterly, autobiographical apologetic, iOrthodoxy
: (1908), Chesterton offered a stunningly brilliant series of observations which, from various angles, illustrated Christianity's singularly ingenious capacity to accomodate the seemingly irreconcilable paradoxes of human life. It was this element of the Cosmos which struck Chesterton as strangely perplexing, and in Christianity he found them finally intelligible. Of course, intelligibility doesn't necessitate comfort, but it is surely preferable to the skepticism and nihilism which so often precipitate despair. This is not to imply, by any means, that Theistic, Christian optimism is relativistic, either. On the contrary: Catholic Christianity is predicated upon objective Truth. It is precisely that Truth, however paradoxical, which sets us free.

G K Chesterton has been described as one of the most unjustly neglected writers of our time. Born in 1874, he became a journalist and later began writing books and pamphlets. His work includes novels, literary and social criticism, political papers and spiritual essays in a style characterised by enormous wit, paradox, humility and wonder. He converted to Catholicism in 1922 and he explores the nature of spirituality in many of his books and essays, including the mighty Orthodoxy. Chesterton is one of the few authors who are genuinely timeless and whose work has as much relevance today as when it was written.

(The Man Who Was Thursday, 1908) No animal ever invented anything as bad as drunkenness - or as good as drink. Truth is sacred and if you tell the truth too often nobody will believe it. We make our friends; we make our enemies; but God makes our next-door neighbour. Angels fly because they take themselves lightly. You cannot grow a beard in a moment of passion. Chesterton can best be called simply 'a writer' for he was equally well-known as an essayist, journalist, literary critic, poet, novelist, humorist and Roman Catholic apologist.
He began life, however, as a trainee visual artist. After leaving St. Paul's School in London he attended the Slade School, then the best known and most fashionable of English art schools, and in later years he was able to contribute illustrations to the works of his friend Hilaire Belloc . However he abandoned an artistic career in favour of a journalistic one, contributing to numerous London periodicals and eventually becoming the editor of his own G.K.'s Weekly, the organ of the Distributists' League which advocated the encouragement of small-holdings and a return to what to him was the idyllic life of the medieval tradesmen's guilds. For him the enemy was the ruthless, inhumanity of large scale industrialisation and the arid bureaucratic life it engendered.
These feelings encouraged him, in 1922, to become a Roman Catholic and he became a great and famous defender of Catholicism both in his writings and in well-attended public debates with such well-known sceptical figures as
