Creative Perfumes The chief object of education is not to learn things but to unlearn things.
The artistic temperament is a disease that afflicts amateurs. It is a disease which arises from men no having sufficient power of expression to utter and get rid of the element of art in their being. "Art, like morality, consists in drawing the line somewhere." One sees great things from the valley; only small things from the peak. The way to love anything is to realize that it might be lost.

British writer and critic known for his Roman Catholicism and his conservative political views. His works include essays, a series of detective novels featuring Father Brown, and volumes of criticism and polemics. Encyclopedia Chesterton, G. K. (Gilbert Keith Chesterton), 1874–1936, English author. Conservative, even reactionary, in his thinking, Chesterton was a convert (1922) to Roman Catholicism and its champion. He has been called the “prince of paradox” because his dogma is often hidden beneath a light, energetic, and whimsical style. A prolific writer, Chesterton wrote studies of Browning (1903) and Dickens (1906); several novels including The Napoleon of Notting Hill (1904) and The Man Who Was Thursday (1908); a noted series of crime stories featuring Father Brown as detective; many poems, collected in 1927; and his famous essays, collected in Tremendous Trifles Come to Think of It (1930), and other volumes. He is probably best known for his series about the priest-detective Father Brown who appeared in 50 stories. Between 1900 and 1936 Chesterton published some one hundred books.
G.K. Chesterton was born in London into a middle-class family on May 29, 1874. He studied at University College and the Slade School of Art (1893-96). Around 1893 he had gone through a crisis of skepticism and depression and during this period he experimented with the Ouija board and grew fascinated with diabolism. In 1895 Chesterton left University College without a degree and worked for the London publisher Redway, and T. Fisher Unwin (1896-1902). Chesterton later renewed his Christian faith; the courtship of his future wife, Frances Blogg, whom he married in 1901 also helped him to pull himself out of his spiritual crisis.
In 1900 appeared Greybeards At Play

Gilbert Keith Chesterton
Prolific English critic and author of verse, essays, novels, and short stories. Chesterton was with George Bernard Shaw, Hilaire Belloc, and H.G. Wells among the big Edwardian men of letters. He is probably best known for his series about the priest-detective Father Brown who appeared in 50 stories. Between 1900 and 1936 Chesterton published some one hundred books. "The vast mass of humanity, with their vast mass of idle books and idle words, have never doubted and never will doubt that courage is splendid, that fidelity is noble, that distressed ladies should be rescued, and vanquished enemies spared. There are a large number of cultivated persons who doubt these maxims of daily life, just there are a large number of persons who believe they are the Prince of Wales; and I am told that both classes of people are entertaining conversationalists." (from 'A Defense of Penny Dreadfuls', 1901) G.K. Chesterton was born in London into a middle-class family. He did not learn to read until he was over eight and one of his teachers told him, "If we opened your head, we should not find brain but only a lump of white fat." Chesterton studied at

G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936)
From "The Poet and the Cheese" in A Miscellany of Men . . .There (after trifling with beef, mutton, puddings, pies, and so on) I got a Stilton cheese. I was so much moved by my memories that I wrote a sonnet to the cheese. Some critical friends have hinted to me that my sonnet is not strictly new; that it contains "echoes" (as they express it) of some other poem that they have read somewhere. Here, at least, are the lines I wrote :
SONNET TO A STILTON CHEESE
Stilton, thou shouldst be living at this hour
And so thou art. Nor losest grace thereby;
England has need of thee, and so have I
She is a Fen. Far as the eye can scour,
League after grassy league from Lincoln tower
To Stilton in the fields, she is a Fen.
Yet this high cheese, by choice of fenland men,
Like a tall green volcano rose in power.
Plain living and long drinking are no more,
And pure religion reading "Household Words",
And sturdy manhood sitting still all day
Shrink, like this cheese that crumbles to its core;
While my digestion, like the House of Lords

Chesterton 's chief memorial, however, is his life work, and this exhibition is designed to display the remarkable range of his talents as poet, critic, novelist, biographer, controversialist, illustrator. Comprehensive as it is, the exhibition is far from exhaustive; the manuscripts and original drawings are extensive and the section showing first editions of his books in chronological order is virtually complete. The remaining sections offer representative, but necessarily limited, examples of his work in various fields both public and private; the translations give some indication of the world-wide nature of his appeal; the many writings about him and the letters to him provide abundant evidence of the esteem in which he was held by his contemporaries and in which he is still held by many in our own day." Contents: Introduction; A : First editions of books and pamphlets by G. K.

J. P de Fonseka and G. K. Chesterton J. P. De Fonseka was one of the greatest English writers Ceylon ever produced. He has been compared with the the best of English essayists like Charles Lamb, E. V. Lucas, G. K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc and was a friend and great admirer of Gilbrt Keith Chesterton. In fact he was natured in the Chester-Belloc school of writing and G. K. was to have a great influence on his writings. This close association brought them together many times. J. P. closely associated Chesterton while he was in England during the period 1926 to 1930. This rare picture of that association shows G. K. Chesterton with J. P. de Fonseka, possibly taken around 1929 while J. P. was in England. J. P. also counted amongst his friends, some of the literary giants of the era. Names mentioned in the articles about him include Hilaire Belloc, E. V. Lucas, Bernard Shaw, Robert Lynd, Eric Gill, A. P. Herbert, Walter de la Mare, Sir John Squire, and Francis Thompson among others. J. P. also edited two of Chesterton's Anthologies (collections of Essays) in 1929. A comprehensive list of Chesterton publications, included in a website dedicated to him, lists two books which J. P. contributed as editor or compiler. An extract from this comprehensive list is reproduced below. A link to this website has been provided at the end of this page.
