One hundred years ago, on July 15, Russia's most famous physician, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, died of tuberculosis at 44 years of age in Badenweiler, Germany. His body was shipped to Moscow by train in a refrigerated car marked "For Oysters." Chekhov's writing as a dramatist made his works ideally suited for the artistic purposes of the celebrated Russian director and producer Konstantin Stanislavski . Not unlike his short stories, Chekhov's plays place little emphasis on plot. They are more concerned with the minutiae of daily life and with the hopelessness of human communication familiar in Chekhov's short stories. A confounded Tolstoy demanded of Chekhov, " Where does one get to with your heroes? From the sofa to the privy, and from the privy back to the sofa." The dialogue in Chekhov's drama is discontinuous and interruptions and long pauses often preclude the existence of a central character in Chevov's drama. Both his plays and short stories underline the same ambiguous conclusion through the representation of unresolved social and internal conflict of their characters.
Although it is conceivable that Stanislavski's innovative ideas about theatrical direction and production developed independently of the work of Chekhov, it seems more than likely that Chekhov's writing style was in fact inspiration for what would become Stanislavski's untried method of theatrical direction and production.

Search all of Anton Chekhov Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born in the small seaport of Taganrog, Ukraine on January 17th in the year 1860. Today he is remembered as a playwright and one of the masters of the modern short story. He was the son of a grocer and the grandson of a serf who had bought his freedom, that and that his sons, 19 years earlier. Chekhov spent his early years under the shadow of his father's religious fanaticism while working long hours in his store.
Chekhov attended a school for Greek boys in his hometown from 1867-1868 and later he attended the local grammar school from 1868-1876 when his father went bankrupt and moved the family to Moscow. Chekhov, only 16 at the time, decided to remain in his hometown and supported himself by tutoring as he continued his schooling for 3 more years.
After he finished grammar school Chekhov enrolled in the Moscow University Medical School, where he would eventually become a doctor. Chekhov's medical and science experience is evident in much of his work as evidenced by the apathy many of his characters show towards tragic events.

January 29 ~  Sparkling With Diamonds
"We s h a l l find peace . We shall h e a r the angels , we shall see the sky s p a r k l i n g with diamonds." ~ Anton Chekhov Literature's great dramatist and short story writer, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860-1904) was born on this day in the seaport town of Taganrog, in southern Russia and grew up working in his father's grocery store. He once said, "Man is what he believes Chekhov attended medical school on a scholarship. He began writing to support his family and continued writing while practicing medicine. He eventually gave up medicine to write full-time. "Perhaps the feelings that we experience when we are in love represent a normal state. Being in love shows a person who he should be," he said. His stories explored characters more than plot, capturing emotions with almost clinical objectivity. His narrative voice, a study in calm realism, was electrifying. "Don't tell me the moon is shining," he said. "Show me the glint of light on broken glass." His playsincluding Ivano The Seagull Uncle Vanya The Three Sisters (1901), and The Cherry Orchard (1904)celebrated life and love in his homeland.

Quotes of the Day for 29 January 2005 - Anton Chekhov
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born at Taganrog, Ukraine on this day in 1860. Russian society was in flux, the serfs were all freed the next year. His father's business failed and the family moved to Moscow where Chekhov was educated. To help pay for medical school he started writing short stories, and became more serious about his writing after his career as a physician started. For health reasons he spent several years in France, indulging his appetite for farce in the theater. His most important work was written in the last decade of his life, plays that he considered comedies with tragic incidents. He was frustrated at the number of productions that presented them as tragedies with light moments. I'm with Chekhov, we're much healthier to look around us and see life as a farce with some bad times to overcome than to see life as a series of problems. He who desires nothing, hopes for nothing, and is afraid of nothing, cannot be an artist.

The physician and writer Anton Chekhov, son of a grocer and grandson of a serf, had a short but intense and turbulent life, fighting against his tuberculosis or with his dependents. While studying medicine, he supported his family by writing humorous sketches. He died at the age of forty-four He is known as one of the greatest playwrights and short story novelist, torn between his longing for solitude and his need for company. As a short story writer, his reputation was definitively acquired in 1888, when The Steppe won the Pushkin Prize. After a visit to a penal colony in 1890, he wrote The Island of Sakhalin. Then he lived near Moscow, where he ran a free clinic for peasants. His first play, Ivanov (1887) had little success, but the SeaGull and his next plays were acclaimed at the Moscow Art Theater. In 1901, Anton Pavlovich married Olga Knipper, an actress and interpreter of many of his characters. Three years later, he died of tuberculosis. His style, emphasizing internal dramas, mood and characterization, is focusing on the tragicomic aspects of daily events.
