In this article poststructuralism is treated as a bundle of trends in intellectual history united by a common endeavor to revise structuralist assumptions, theories, and methods, and to cultivate themata the structuralists neglected. Four trends are considered: deconstruction, interactional pragmatics, empirical study of literature ( empirische Literaturwissenschaft Steiner, P. (Peter), 1946-

It can also be one of the most daunting, challenging, and humbling experience anyone can face. Cultural anthropologists tell us that acting, at least in ritual form, is as old as the first humans sitting around the prehistoric campfire playing out for the gathered community the roles of demons, hunted animals, or even rain spirits." A to Z Help Subject Guides: Literature Author Guides This directory is an index of indexes. It contains pointers to individual author guides or other cumulative documents that deal with specific writers. Admittedly, most of these authors are "literary." I have not included many authors from genres such as science fiction or romance. I think other sources do a better job of that than I can. As with everything on the Web, many of these guides are ephemeral; they disappear from the Web almost as soon as they appear. If you encounter a bad connection in this guide, please let me know about it. Another point: this page is NOT a catalog of every single text available on the net. Return to the Literature Webliography page and search the various text archives or use a web search engine for a more complete listing of titles available on the net. July 1/2, 1904 (July 14/15, New Style) Russian playwright and one of the great masters of modern short story. In his work Chekhov combined the dispassionate attitude of a scientist and a doctor with the sensitivity and psychological understanding of an artist. Chekhov portrayed often life in the Russian small towns, where tragic events occur in a minor key, as a part of everyday life. His characters are passive, filled with the feeling of hopelessness and the fruitlessness of all efforts. "What difference does it make?" says Chebutykin in Three Sisters "There is not, or there hardly is, a single Russian gentleman or university man who does not boast of his past. The present is always worse than the past. Why? Because Russian excitability has one specific characteristic: it is quickly followed by exhaustion" (from Letters on the Short Story, the Drama and other Literary Topics
