The 1900s: Where it all began
by Nigel Moll
It was late on an autumn night as I swung the car into the rough lane that leads to our house. A few feet beyond the mailbox post, the headlights caught something in the grass. At first it could have been a rabbit standing tall, but closer inspection revealed it to be a magnificent bird, most likely a Peregrine falcon but possibly a gyrfalcon, and it had chosen our lane as a resting place on its migratory route. The bird stood fast, boldly staring at the car, not six feet in front of the headlights, shifting from one leg to the other and sometimes swiveling its head to take in the wider scene.
Neither bird nor observer showed any inclination to move, and we scrutinized each other respectfully for fully five minutes. The strength and majesty of this masterful creature were palpable. Eventually the bird chose to fly, and with a few powerful beats of its elegant wings it climbed away effortlessly into the darkness and perched in a tree, lost from sight in the night. Bidding the bird safe passage to wherever it was drawn, I admired its perfect blend of form and function, its mobility and mastery of the sky, its ability, on the command of impulses from a small brain, to leave the surface of the earth, rise into thin air and fly wherever it chooses.

Upon the merger of Travel Air with the Curtiss-Wright Airplane Company, Walter Beech became President of the new corporation. However he desired a more personal participation in aircraft design and manufacture and so co-founded Beech Aircraft Company with his wife, Olive Ann, in 1932. His early Beechcrafts set many distance and speed records and won the prestigious Bendix and McFadden races. Perhaps the most novel among these, with design and performance features years ahead of its time, was the model 17 Stagger Wing Biplane. In the postwar years Walter Beech again applied his design genius to producing a new line of light aircraft, the most famous of which was the "V" tailed Bonanza. Today, Beech Aircraft Company (now Raytheon Aviation) remains a leader in the design, development and production of personal, corporate and military aircraft, as well as in space research. Invested 1982 in the International Aerospace Hall of Fame.

California's Story of Flight . . . A Historical Perspective

The basic concept of powered flight was achieved on December 17, 1903, when two brothers, Wilbur and Orville Wright, became the first men in aviation history to be able to achieve powered flight.

Since the earliest of time man has dreamt of flight. One of the World's greatest artist, architect, inventor and philosopher, Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519), spent nearly twenty years of his life inventing various contraptions for use by man in the area of flight. His sketch books are filled with ideas that even include the earliest design for a parachute and even the helicopter (Helix).

Yet, before man could successfully take to the air, he had to learn the critical lessons of basic aerodynamics.

Anyone who has observed the prowess of the hawk in flight can only watch in awe. This magnificent bird-of-prey is able to glide through the sky on just the air currents alone, then suddenly, with its wings swept back, is able to dive down and sweep its prey in just moments. Yet, men would laugh at those who tried to emulate these magnificent creatures –adding "If god wanted man to fly he would have given him wings."

More than 150 aviation greats have been enshrined in Dayton.
The National Hall of Fame, in Dayton, Ohio, began inducting aviation pioneers in 1962. The first were, naturally enough, Wilbur and Orville Wright, followed by 153 other aviation notables. The hall of Famers (with their year of induction ) are as follows: Allen, William McP. (1900-1985). Led development of commercial and military jet travel. Helped to advance supersonic flight and space travel in various roles at Boeing Airplane Co. Andrews, Frank M. (1884-1943). Reorganized Army Air Corps. Helped establish independent General Headquarters Air Force. Armstrong, Neil A. (born 1930). Served as a military pilot and test pilot of X-15 and other supersonic aircraft. Astronaut on the Gemini 8 and Apollo 11 space missions. First man to walk on the moon. Arnold

I. Introduction
A long time ago I had become interested in a TV series called Connections, hosted and written by James Burke. The premise of the show was that the events which have shaped and continue to shape our world are often the product of seemingly unrelated events, which eventually fall into place and lead to a great global change. Flight was one of these global changes. How would Burke have handled this topic? It’s my guess that it all started in the universal wishes of man to free himself from the chains of gravity, as evidenced in the myths of many cultures. From this starting point we would look at kites, the lateen sail, flight toys (old and new), hot air balloons, propulsion units, hang gliders, and the men who made them. Eventually we would end with the Kitty Hawk experience, the controlled flight of man in an aeroplane.

    I. Introduction
Today’s mathematics curricula and education goals should reflect the importance of mathematical literacy. Therefore this unit will attempt to reflect some of these new directions both in the content and the method of teaching. The new direction can be summarized in the following statements:1
Students should learn the value of mathematics.
To reduce math anxiety, students should become more confident in their abilities to do the subject.
Students should become more confident and develop skills as mathematic problem solvers.
Students learn to communicate and reason mathematically.
Students should be able to think of diverse ways to solve a problem.
The mathematics curriculum should also reflect the mathematical needs of the next decade. Today’s students will be working with tools and in an environment that will need an understanding of more complex thinking skills. Teachers and curriculum planners must understand and anticipate the changing needs of industries and the society. Henry Pollak2 (1987) summarized the mathematical needs and expectations for employers in the industrial sector of the future.

The History of the Discovery of the First Flying Machine People created many elaborate flying machines in their attempts to see the world from the sky. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was one of the world's great thinkers and first serious student of the science of aeronautics. Had it not been for the breadth of his genius and the resulting variety of his interests, he might have designed the first man-carrying glider. Leonardo saw the difference between flapping flight and gliding flight. In one of his notebooks he wrote: "Beginnings of things are often the cause of great results. Thus we may see a small almost imperceptible movement of the rudder turn a ship of marvelous size and loaded with a very heavy cargo... so in those birds which can support themselves above the course of the winds without beating their wings, a slight movement of the wing or tail, serving them to enter below or above the wind, suffices to prevent their fall". Here, in Leonardo's own words, was the key to successful gliding which, in turn, was to become the key to successful manned flight. Here was a description of the importance of delicate controls. But, a far as we know, he designed only flapping machines. Leonardo studied wind currents and the effects of varying temperatures on the movement of air. His notebooks are filled with drawings of the structures of the wings and tails of various birds, man-carrying machines and devices for the testing of wings. Leonardo's notes on bird and mechanical flight were not studied by other pioneers until the nineteenth century.
