From the oldest masters down to Hokusai , it is constantly welling up in the drollest conceits. It is of all descriptions, too. Now it lurks in merry ambush, like the faint suggestion of a smile on an otherwise serious face, so subtle that the observer is left wondering whether the artist could have meant what seems more like one’s own ingenious discovery,….... Those Far Eastern paintings which have to do with man fall for the most part under one of two heads, the facetious and the historical. …... impersonality has prevented the Far Oriental from having much amour proper . He has no particular aversion to caricaturing himself. Percival LOWELL The Soul of the Far East Japanese here I. Percival LOWELL picks out the painter called MARUYAMA Okio (1733 – 1795) as a serious and sober side of the Japanese art, and as an opposite lighter droll part of the artists, chooses the name of KATSUSHIKA Hokusai as above. We anyway don’t suppose LOWELL was particularly devoted to the Japanese arts, especially to the pictures; and furthermore it is known that he tended to regard any Art was inferior to the Western Science, and so it might be quite unnecessary to mind what he wrote unreasonably about

New books
Rudy Kousbroek's book In de tijdmachine door Japan describes his 'court journey of the year 2000'. Kousbroek travels the same route as the Dutch between 1609 and 1858 did from Nagasaki to the court of the Shogun in Edo (Tokyo). From what you can see today, he describes the history based on the various journals and books that still exist. 'Sightseeing in the past', as he calls it himself. Unfortunately only available in Dutch. Very worthwhile reading if you're interested in the subject. Reinier Hesselink's books Twee spiegels op Cambang and De gevangenen uit Nambu provide an interesting overview of the daily life on Deshima, and the relationship with the Japanese authorities. The latter one also reconstructs the political scene around the Shogun (Tokugawa Iemitsu) in Edo, and the effect on the Japanese-Dutch relation.

Preface: Journey from Okinawa to Ryukyu
Izena Island from the North-WestA—iyori 2003
Synopsis of Preface
Okinawa has been regarded since before the World War II as a Southern Periphery of Japanese cultural territory where you could find even today several archaic Japanese religious traditions: a female leadership in religious rituals, for example. In reality, it is as distant from Fuzhou in China as from Kagoshima, Kyushu, Japan: about 600 kilometers from both sides. Ryukyu , an old name to call Okinawa, had been since the 14th until the 19th century, a tribute country under the Chinese Empire, Ming and Qing Dynasty, where we can find several Chinese cultural influences, for example, in the Worship tradition of domestic furnace Divinity, Fi-nu-kang in the Kitchen of every House, served by Housewife. At the same time, in their language, basically Japanese, the old Japanese turns or expressions still survive there. An Observation given by a Western Linguist, Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850-1935) upon it has tried to explain that it could be a descendant language derived from an archaic common Japanese. In addition, it was this idea that urged Japanese Scholors a further interpretation to regard the Okinawa Culture as a descendant of Japanese Archaic Culture in general. It is however doubtful to keep this idea against the fact that the female leadership in religious tradition has been maintained all through the reign of the Ryukyu Kingdom since the 14th until the 19th century. As a fact, it is even so today in the folklore traditions, whereas, in Japan, the leadership was transferred to the male side in the beginning of the historical period. We cannot help have an impression that the hypothesis dismissed almost the whole history of the State Religion of the Ryukyu Kingdom, upon the remains of which the ethnographers have described so many observations in modern age as the archaic traces of Old Japan or as an inner expressions of the local community. The Female Religious leadership in Ryukyu, however, has been an institutionalized system of the State Religion.

I was assigned this book for a class on Andean History and somewhat reticent to read it. A book about prisons and prisoners? It didn't sound like fascinating reading. Happily, I was quite mistaken. "Criminals" was not only very informative about Peruvian prisons, but also related this to Peruvian society at large. In addition, Aguirre did a very good job explaining his more technical terms (without coming off as a high school textbook). Not least, he is simply a very compelling writer, even with what had the capacity to be a borign topic. marketplace information. complete product info, click here...
