Linguistic Systems and Social Models: A Case Study from Japanese
Yoko Hasegawa
University of California, Berkeley
1. Introduction
It is widely recognized by researchers in pragmatics and sociolinguistics that certain linguistic subsystems of a given language cannot be accounted for without recourse to the social organizations of the speech community, e.g. addressing and kinship terms, linguistic politeness. Anthropologists, ethnographers, and sociologists propose a social model and commonly use linguistic subsystems to support their arguments; linguists, in turn, use such a model to explicate various linguistic phenomena. Thus, a mutual dependency exists between sociological and linguistic investigations. Japanese is one of the languages that have been most extensively investigated in this respect. Because social models are usually constructed explicitly or implicitly for a particular issue with a particular readership in mind e.g. in the case of Japanese, to plan the Allied Occupation of post-war Japan, to explain Japan's rapid economic growth in the 60s, to solve US-Japan trade imbalances in the 80s the adequacy of each model is relative to the objectives of the investigation. It is, therefore, justifiable, in principle, for researchers to use linguistic data selectively to meet their needs. However, when a model is applied to unintended areas, this selectivity of linguistic data can lead to a distorted view of the speech community. This, in fact, is the case with the Japanese language. The present study (i) reviews several major works covering both the Japanese language and Japanese society, and (ii) demonstrates that the prevailing group model of Japanese society is inconsistent with the notion of

Authority Record File for Authors in Netsuke and Related Arts Created for The Ultimate Netsuke Bibliography Total of 1,639 Author Records by Norman L. Sandfield A Work in Progress as of September 1, 2003 This is a work in progress, created in the summer of 2003. I encourage you to read it with a critical eye, and share it with friends. Corrections and suggestions are encouraged and welcomed by the author. Please contact him at norman@sandfield.org 1) What is an authority record? An authority record is a collection of information about one name, uniform title, or topical term heading, which allows consistency in bibliographic documentation. Each authority record contains the established form of the heading, 'see from' references, 'see also from' references, and notes. http://www.oclc.org/oclc/man/5411aug/appc.htm Authority records also provide cross references to lead users to the headings used in the Library of Congress's Authority Records catalog, e.g., a search under: Snodgrass, Quintus Curtius, 1835-1910 will lead users to the authorized form of heading for Mark Twain, i.e., Twain, Mark, 1835-1910. It is important to note that authority records do not represent materials in a Library's collection. Rather, they are a tool used by librarians to organize the library catalog and assist users in finding those materials. A recent reviewer (in a library publication) noted that users may find helpful information in Library of Congress Authorities, such as an author's middle name or a company name change.

Travellers in the Far East The superior veneration so often excited by objects that are distant and unknown, shows - not perhaps the wrong-headedness of a man, but rather the transcendent power of his imagination. Alexander Kinglake, Eothen (Dent, London, 1908/1962, p.120) Kinglake did not penetrate to the Far East, but he certainly travelled in a little-known and challenging orient that satisfied his taste for the exotic. "The East", a term imprecise enough to accommodate itself to whatever one desires for the purpose, has over the centuries exercised a fascination for westerners that has always made it hard for them to respond to it coolly and neutrally. Whatever the term designates in reality, the idea of it has always represented it to us (or has until quite recently) as remote, mysterious, intriguing, ineluctably other , exciting or appalling but never dull. For, precisely because the tyranny of distance has until the last century or two decreed that Asia should be very little known by almost all westerners, imagination has always been ready to leap to its aid. Kinglake, quoted above, saw this well.

Haiku in English
Theme and Goals: Today, haiku is a popular form of poetry in the English-speaking world. But haiku was nearly unknown outside Japan only a century ago. In this course, we'll investigate the development of English haiku and its present condition. Outline of Course: Beginning in the 1890s, haiku was introduced by Chamberlain, Hearn, Aston, and Noguchi. A few years later, it was discovered by modernist poets. A second wave of interest in haiku began after the Second World War, when more complex views of haiku were introduced by Blyth and Henderson, influencing writers like Jack Kerouac, Gary Snyder and Richard Wright. We will study both of these periods, and look at the subsequent development of English haiku. We'll also try our hand at translating and writing English haiku to get a better understanding of the problems involved in translating between languages and cultures. A: Origins of English haiku

    Sistemi linguistici e modelli sociali
    di Massimiliano Crippa
    17 settembre 2000.
    Io codificato nella lingua giapponese
    Io relazionale e io assoluto
