En 1605 se encuentra en Valladolid, por aquel entonces sede de la Corte, el mismo año en que sale a luz en Madrid la primera parte del Quijote , consiguiendo un éxito inmediato. Biography
Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra was born in Alcal¡ de Henares , near Madrid, Spain in . Little is known of Cervantes' childhood; what's certain is that his family was not well off: his father was continually on the move looking for work. His father was Rodrigo de Cervantes, a surgeon — in those days an ill-paid profession of low repute which eventually led him to debtor's prison. His mother, Leonor de Cortinas, was a descendant of Jewish converts to Christianity. Records indicate that when he was 21 years old ( ) Cervantes was a student at the Estudio de la Villa de Madrid, a pre-graduate liberal arts school. Juan L³pez de Hoyos, Cervantes' teacher at the "Estudio de la Villa," referred to him as "our dear and beloved pupil," a common form of address in those days. In

Although Cervantes' reputation rests almost entirely on his portrait of Don Quixote, his literary production was considerable.
Cervantes was born in Alcalá de Henares, a town near Madrid, into a family of the minor nobility. His father was a doctor and much of his childhood Cervantes spent moving from town to town while his father sought work. He studied in Madrid (1568-69), where his teacher was the humanist Juan López de Hoyos. In 1570 he became a soldier and took part in the sea battle at Lepanto (1571), during which he received a wound that permanently maimed his left hand. In 1575 he set out with his brother Rodrigo on the galley El Sol for Spain. The ship was captured by the Turks and the brothers were taken to Algiers as slaves. Cervantes spent five years as a slave until his family could raise enough money to pay his ransom. Cervantes was released in 1580, and after the return to Madrid he held several temporary administrative posts Cervantes started his literary career in Andalusia in 1580. His first major work was the Galatea (1588), a pastoral romance. It received little contemporary notice and Cervantes never wrote the continuation of it, which he repeatedly promised. In his play

  • Born: 29 September 1547 Birthplace: Alcala de Henares, Spain Died: 23 April 1616 Best Known As: Author of Don Quixote
Full name: Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra Cervantes wrote the epic satire Don Quixote , regarded as the first true modern novel. Little is known of Cervantes's early life; at 23 he enlisted in the Spanish militia and then fought against the Turks in the battle of Lepanto (1571) where a gunshot wound permanently crippled his left hand. He spent four more years at sea and then another five as a slave after being captured by Barbary pirates. Ransomed by his family, he returned to Madrid but his disability hampered him; it was in debtor's prison that he began to write Don Quixote . The title character , a dreamy middle-aged nobleman, sets out through Spain on a makeshift quest to fight injustice through acts of chivalry. Cervantes wrote many other works, including poems and plays, but none had the impact or popularity of his masterpiece. Because of his injury Cervantes was nicknamed "the cripple of Levanto"...
