Biography: Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616): Spanish writer whose satiric novel Don Quixote is one of the masterpieces of literature. He was born in Alcalá de Henares, September 29, 1547. In 1568, when Cervantes was a student, a number of his poems were published to commemorate the death of the Spanish Queen Elizabeth of Valois (wife of Felipe II). As a member of a Spanish regiment, he fought in 1571 against the Turks in the naval battle in Lepanto, where he lost the use of his left hand. While returning to Spain in 1575, he was captured by Barbary pirates. He was taken to Algeria as a slave and held there for ransom. During the next five years he made several unsuccessful attempts to escape, and was finally ransomed in 1580 by his family and friends. Cervantes, deciding to become a writer, wrote many poems and plays between 1582 and 1585; few of these exist today. His novel La Galatea (1585) gained him a reputation, but the proceeds from its sale were not enough to support him. Cervantes then took government jobs, first furnishing supplies to the fleet of the Armada and later collecting taxes. The government imprisoned him several times because he failed to explain, in a satisfactory way, his tax-collecting activities and methods. While in prison, Cervantes conceived the idea for a story about a madman who imagines himself a kind of knight-errant performing the magnificent feats he had read about in medieval tales of chivalry, which were wildly popular in Cervantes' day. The first part was issued in 1605 under the title

Cervantes is the most famous of all Spanish language writers of all time and perhaps the most famous writer of all time in any language, rivaling his contemporary Shakespeare. His birthday was in 1547 at the city of Alcala de Henares near Madrid. Cervantes enlisted in the armed forces in time for the naval Battle of Lepanto (1571) against the Turks. He was injured on his left hand, but continued as a soldier. On his return voyage to Spain in 1575 he was captured by the Turks and spent the next five years as a prisoner of war in Algiers until his return to Madrid. In 1584 he married Catalina of Salazar. He published the novel La Galatea , and several of his comedies without much success. Cervantes became a public official and traveled through Andalusia collecting rents, and gathering goods for the Spanish Armada. These were tasks he did not enjoy since numbers and administration were not his trade. Thirteen years later, Cervantes was thrown in jail in Seville, where he was held for three months, accused of corruption but was set free before going to trial. He settled in Valladolid in 1604, and obtained the rights to publish El Quijote (Don Quixote) , (the most famous book -after the Bible- ever published). By 1608, Cervantes and his family settled once again in Madrid. He dedicated himself completely to his literary works and joined a pious brotherhood. Despite his fame, by then extended throughout Europe, Cervantes led a simple life.

But the Spanish writer is also known as an interesting character in his own right, so much so that the famous dramatic adaptation of his book, the musical Man of La Mancha, features him as a character as much as it does his fictional creation. In the play he is shown in prison, creating and acting out with the other prisoners the plot of Don Quixote But that was only part of his colourful life. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born into an ancient but impoverished Spanish family, the son of an unsuccessful doctor. In 1569 he joined the Spanish army in Italy and was wounded in a naval battle in 1571, leaving his left hand permanently crippled. While returning to Spain four years later he was seized by pirates and held in Algiers until ransomed by friars in 1580. Back in Spain he married (unhappily) and tried to make a living in Madrid by writing. His first attempt at fictional prose, the pastoral romance

Don Quixote . Tradition has it that he wrote it while in prison at Argamasilla in La Manchia. The book was first published in 1605; a second part came out in 1615. Don Quixote has been described as "... that genial and just judge of imposture, folly, vanity, affectation, and insincerity; that tragic picture of the brave man born out of his time, too proud and too just to be of use in his age!" (Frederic Harrison, 1831-1923.) Sir Walter Raleigh (1861-1922) wrote this about Don Quixote Don Quixote
