The Dominion in 1983
by Ralph Centennius [pseudonym]
I. "Before the curing of a strong disease,
"Even in the instant of repair and health,
"The fit is strongest; evils that take leave,
"On their departure most of all show evil." King John, Act III. In the present advanced and happy times it is instructive to take a retrospective glance at the days of our forefathers of the nineteenth century, and to meditate upon the political struggles and events of the past hundred years, that by so doing we may gain a clear insight into the causes which have led to the present wonderful developments. We, in the year of Grace 1983, are too apt to take for granted all the blessings of moral, political and physical science which we enjoy, and to pass over without due consideration the great efforts of our ancestors, which have made our present happy condition possible. Let us try to contrast the Dominion of to-day with the Dominion of 1883. To begin with population. Our population at the last census in 1981, was just over 93,000,000. A hundred years ago a scant 5,000,000 represented this great Canadian nation, which has since so mightily increased and proved itself such a beneficent factor in human affairs. Seven provinces and some sparsely peopled and only partially explored territories formed all that the world then knew as Canada. To-day have we not fifteen provinces for the most part thickly peopled, and long since fully explored to the shores of the Arctic Ocean? In 1883 the United States was one of the leading nations of the world. With a population of over 50,000,000, and an almost illimitable extent of territory still open for settlement by the fugitives from troubled Europe; with exhaustless wealth, developed and undeveloped, it seemed reasonable to suppose that a nation so placed should be able to attain the foremost position and be able to keep it. Such appears to have been the opinion of most foreigners, and also of some of our Canadians of the period, for the wealth, apparent power and prestige of the United States caused many of our weak-kneed ancestors to lose heart in their own country, and in fits of disloyal dejection to fancy there could be no progress except in union with the States. Stout hearts, however, ultimately gained the day, and we in the twentieth century are reaping the benefits won for the country by the valor of our great-grandfathers.

Contemporary Trends in Science Fiction Criticism, 1980-1999
It is not that we are connoisseurs of chaos, but that we are surrounded by it, and equipped for co-existence with it only by our fictive powers.—Frank Kermode, The Sense of an Ending: Studies in the Theory of Fiction The past two decades have seen an explosion of critical writing about sf beyond what anyone might have expected. On the academic side, sf has come to be perceived as centrally relevant in many explorations of contemporary culture, evidenced, for instance, in the institutional "respectability" of journals like SFS and Extrapolation ; in the growing number of sf and sf-related courses in colleges and universities (over 400 courses listed in the special section on "Science Fiction in Academe" in the Nov. 1996 issue of SFS ); and in the proliferation of cultural studies of science and cyberculture which routinely include references to science fiction. At the same time, sophisticated and complex full-length studies devoted to science fiction are filling our shelves in ever greater numbers. Outside the academic arena, the establishment of publications like Science Fiction Eye and The New York Review of Science Fiction , as well as the continuity of magazines like Asimov’s Analog , and the British Interzone , all of which regularly feature critical material, have provided a range of venues for ongoing commentary by sf writers, readers, and fans. While there still remains something of a division between academic and popular commentaries in the field, both

Monthly "Eddie-Torial" You've come to the right place for your Thanksgiving Turkey...look down...wayyyyyyydownnnnnnnnnn... Opinions expressed are not those of my internet provider
but are approved by Mikey and Minnie 2Dogs
To carry on from the September Eddie-Torial the last 3 articles of 1999 will focus on our attitudes to recent prophecy. With recent I mean prophecies made during the Christian era. This month the topic of doomsday seem appropriate. It is apparent that all doomsday prophets base their predictions on several books in the bible according to their personal interpretation. Mind you, with millions of independent minds come millions of interpretations, and millions of people yelling "blasphemy" at each other. It's been a wild ride, and the circus act ain't over by a long shot. Needless to say, the years 3000 and 4000 will be a replay of the years 1000 and 2000. Insanity reigns happily ever onward. Whether these 'interpreters' claim 'second sight' or claim they are prophets by the gift of God doesn't really matter. They are humans with brains who may or may not have insight or may just be crazy people (schizophrenics) with voices and visions in their heads, but who always seem to find followers, no matter how 'off the wall' they appear to the rest of the world. Whether communist or capitalist, whether Christian or Pagan, whether Canadian or Bulgarian...we all love to listen and some we love to hate. In any event...it's a good show, so please excuse if I make light of some and hearken the words of others.
