It is among these extraordinary documents, and unsurpassed by any of them, that the autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini takes its place. But while St. Augustine's aim was religious and didactic, and Pepys noted down in his diary the daily events of his life for his own satisfaction and with no intention that any one should read the ciphered notes in which they were recorded, Cellini wrote that the world might know, after he was dead, what a fellow he had been; what great things he had attempted, and against what odds he had carried them through. Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571) led an adventurous life. At the age of fifteen he became a goldsmith against the will of his father, who wanted him to be a musician and composer. Rich Florentines, noblemen from Tuscany and even the church took an interest in the young goldsmith and gave him important commissions. Cellini became one of the most respected sculptors of his time, famous beyond the borders of Italy.

Cellini Cellini Benvenuto (1500-1571) was an Italian goldsmith and sculptor. The sculptor He was not regarded as an outstanding sculptor during his lifetime, and it is doubtful of his name would mean much today except for his writing. The autobiography His Autobiography was begun in 1558 and published in 1728. The Autobiography follows the bragging, arrogant Cellini through adventure after adventure in the courts of Rome, Florence, and Paris. He dramatized each incident as if it were an event that moved the world. His story Cellini's story is instructive as well as entertaining. It takes the reader through such historical events as the siege of Rome in 1527, and introduces people of his time in such a way that they seem to live again. He vividly describes every step of the casting of his masterpiece, Perseus. Cellini says that the completion of typical of his exaggerations. Purseus The reader must be on guard, especially when the artist appraises his own deeds. However, critics have praised Perseus for its expressive outlines and striking patina (oxidized surface). Cellini's only identifiable work as a goldsmith, except for some coins and medals, is an elaborate silver and gold table ornament known as the Saltcellar of Francis I. It was done in the 1540's. Home Michelangelo The forced poses, the influence of the both the movement known as mannerism and of Michelangelo. The same ornamentation appears in Cellini's semicircular bronze relief of the goddess Diana, called Nymph of Fontainbleau (1543-1544), made for King Francis I of France. Cellini was born in Florence.

We learn much concerning Benvenuto Cellini from his autobiography. He was a man of lusts, and lies, and poetic fancies. He was a great braggadocio but he was also a true artist and the greatest goldsmith of his time. As if to prove to the world that he was capable of executing more than the miniature pieces which he did in gold, he worked for years to model and cast the Perseus which still stands where he placed it, in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. A fascinating account of his casting of the famous statue in bronze is to be found in his autobiography. For his subject he chose the Greek hero Perseus who was assigned the task of slaying the fearful Medusa, she with the hair of poisonous snakes. So horrible was Medusa that one who looked upon her was turned to stone. To accomplish the perilous assignment he was assisted by the gods, who gave him a polished shield in which he could see Medusa without looking directly at her, a magic sword, a pair of winged sandals, and a cap of darkness which made him invisible. The contrasting horizontal and vertical positions of the two bodies could have diffused the interest of the group. The sculptor avoided this by drawing the crumpled body of Medusa into an approximate square atop the ornate pedestal.

Biography of Italian Artist Benvenuto Cellini
About the famous Renaissance painter Benvenuto Cellini, history and account of his autobiography.
GALLERY OF GREAT PERFORMING AND CREATIVE ARTISTS BENVENUTO CELLINI (1500-1571) Most Italian artists of Cellini's day are known through a book of biographical sketches compiled by one of their number, Vasari. But Benvenuto Cellini was not willing to entrust his presentation to posterity to anyone but himself. He wrote his own biography, a lengthy, swashbuckling one that dealt little with art. Cellini's life, as told by himself, reads like another Decameronon which he may well have patterned his book. Historians disagree over how much in it is fact, how much fiction. But it proved a best-seller when first published in 1728, a century and a half after his death. It was translated into English in 1771 and has become a standard work of literature. When the original manuscript of the autobiography was rediscovered in 1804, it showed that publishers had embellished it only slightly. The salty, straight-from-the-gutter language was fit for a Sicilian fisherman, not a master artist. So was the brawling and lusty eating and whoring. But Cellini was not an artist by nature. The son of a musician, he was straitjacketed into music lessons until the age of 15, then rebelled and was apprenticed as a common laborera goldsmith. But even that fell through. Cellini got into a duel and was banished from his home city of Florence. He wandered about Italy, working where he could, and arrived in Rome at the age of 19. Pope Clement VII took an interest in his work and fed him a series of commissions. Other prominent citizens did likewise, and soon Cellini had a reputation that stretched from Venice to Milan. He fashioned jeweled boxes, candlesticks, metal plates, vases, caskets, and coffers. Practically none of this work survives, for it was melted down into bullion. After running afoul of the papal graces, Cellini was briefly imprisoned and went into self-imposed exile in France on his release. There he was hailed as a hero and genius and warmly received by Francis I. In 1545 he returned to Florence, where he remained until his death.

Die Verschwörung der schwarzen Teufel im Kolosseum zu Rom
The famous Renaissance sculptor and engraver wrote his autobiography in two parts between 1558 and 1566. It was first printed in 1728.
Cellini (1500-1571) led an adventurous life. At the age of fifteen he became a goldsmith against the will of his father, who wanted him to be a musician and composer. Rich Florentines, noblemen from Tuscany and also the church took an interest in the young goldsmith and gave him important commissions. Cellini became one of the most respected sculptors of his time, famous beyond the borders of Italy. The Vita describes Cellini's works and those who commissioned them, and also his turbulent life and the "dark side" to this strong-willed and pugnacious artist.
The book was widely read in Italy after it was first published. At the end of the eighteenth century it was rediscovered and translated into other languages.
Prechtl depicts Cellini's life in 32 pictures. As there is only one existing authentic portrait of Cellini, Prechtl invented his own Benvenuto.
