Benvenuto Cellini
Goldsmith and sculptor
Florence 1500-1571

An artist of genius who had a terrible character, which was often to lead him into trouble with the law. He wrote a treatise on sculpture and the art of goldsmithery (Florence 1568) and a picturesque autobiography (1558-66) published in Naples in 1728, which is an excellent description of the artistic climate of his times and has inspired both the theatre and the cinema.
The Perseus in the Loggia dei Lanzi
He studied in various workshops in Florence, Siena, Pisa and Rome. It was Rome he fled to in 1519 after being involved in a brawl and he was to remain there until 1527. He then stayed in Florence and Mantova, returning to Rome to open his own goldsmith's workshop in 1529 under the protection of Pope Clement VII: he carried out works inspired by the drawings of Leonardo, Michelangelo , Raffaello and Filippino Lippi.
Cosimo I de Medici at the Bargello
He travelled to France (1540-45) and created several works there, all of them dispersed today except for the bronze Nymph in the Louvre and the famous gold and enamelled Salt and Pepper Holder (1543) today in Vienna, where reminders of Florentine sculpture are united with the typical refinement of the Mannerist culture of Fontainebleau.

Cosimo I, Museo Bargello
Cellini, Benvenuto
(1500-1571) Goldsmith and worker in bronze, born Florence; died there. He worked exclusively as a goldsmith, the leading one of his day, until he visited the court of Francis I, in , when he began casting bronze statues. His masterpiece is the colossal "Perseus" of the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence, executed for Cosimo de' Medici, . The story of its casting is vividly told in his famous " Autobiography ," an egotistical but picturesque record of his adventurous life. It includes his description of the siege of Rome, , where he claimed to have killed the Constable de Bourbon and wounded the Prince of Orange. Among exquisite examples of his work are coins executed for Paul III and Clement VII, an elaborate jeweled morse, or brooch, for a cope of the latter, and the intricately wrought golden salt-cellar of Francis I, now in the Vienna museum.

Benvenuto Cellini
The son of a musician and builder of musical instruments. He received his early artistic training from the Florentine goldsmith Marcone. In 1519 Cellini moved to Rome, remaining until the city's fall to the Spanish Emperor in 1527. According to his autobiography Cellini played a remarkable role in the unsuccessful defense of Rome in 1527. In 1529 he killed a man who had earlier killed Cellini's brother. In Florence Cellini created one of the most notable monuments of the Italian Renaissance, the bronze figure Perseus holding the Head of Medusa.
The Great Books Benvenuto Cellini
This web page is part of a biographical database on Great Ideas . These are living ideas that have shaped, defined and directed world culture for over 2,500 years. By definition the Great Ideas are radical. As such they are sometimes misread, or distorted by popular simplifications. Understanding a Great Idea demands personal engagement. Our selection of Great Ideas is drawn from literature and philosophy science art music ... theatre , and cinema . We also include biographies of pivotal historical and religious figures , as well as contributions from women and other historically under-represented minorities . The result is an integrated multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary database built upon the framework of a Great Books Core List developed by Mortimer Adler (1902-2001) nearly 50 years ago.

Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571)
He was born in Florence, exiled when still young because of his fighting and dueling, and studied briefly with Michelangelo in Rome. He was a skilled sculptor and metal worker. Returning to Florence in 1545 he produced his major work of art, a statue of Perseus with the head of Medusa. He also wrote his autobiography, which made him more famous than his artworks and was the basis of the opera Benvenuto Cellini by Hector Berlioz. Needless to say, perhaps, he is very much the hero of his own text.
We always try to locate images of the specific works discussed in the journal. As you might expect, this is often impossible. Failing that, we seek out similar or typical work by the artist. The images in our files are linked below. Perseus Neptune and Ceres (salt cellar)

AUSTRIA Benvenuto Cellini
Metal-smith, sculptor, author and eccentric, Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571) is purportedly considered by many to be one of the finest Italian artists in the generation following Michelangelo. Also known for his grandiose autobiography, Cellini was a convoluted character, claiming to have served and bickered with dukes, bishops, cardinals, kings and queens. Cellini also asserted himself to be a duelist and pugilistic political figure, who committed a variety of crimes and embarked on a myriad of misadventures. While the majority of Cellini's works in precious metal has been melted down and lost forever, the "Saliera" is most notable for being the last remaining example of Cellini's work in gold - stolen on May 11, 2003.

Name: Benvenuto Cellini Birth Date: November 3, 1500 Death Date: February 13, 1571 Place of Birth: Florence, Italy Place of Death: Florence, Italy Nationality: Italian Gender: Male Occupations: goldsmith, sculptor Benvenuto Cellini Main Biography The Italian goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571) is considered the greatest goldsmith of the Italian Renaissance. He was also the author of the celebrated "Autobiography." Given the immense pride that Benvenuto Cellini took in his talents, it is ironic that very few certain examples of his art as a sculptor exist today and that he is best known for his Autobiography . It is an extraordinary record of absorbing interest on many levels: a spirited and candid revelation of a complex character; a narrative of historical importance for its account of the working life of a 16th-century artist in his relations with his family, friends, enemies, and patrons; and a document of great interest for a description of the techniques of sculpture which has still not been fully investigated. Cellini stopped working on his Autobiography in 1558, and it was not published until 1728. It enchanted the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who wrote the first of countless trans.....

Besides the works in gold and silver which have been adverted to, Cellini executed several pieces of sculpture on a grander scale. The most distinguished of these is the bronze group of Perseus holding the head of Medusa, a work (first suggested by Duke Cosimo de Medici) now in the Loggia dei Lanzi at Florence, full of the fire of genius and the grandeur of a terrible beauty, one of the most typical and unforgettable monuments of the Italian Renaissance, The casting of this great work gave Cellini the utmost trouble and anxiety; and its completion was hailed with rapturous homage from all parts of Italy. The original relief from the foot of the pedestalPerseus and Andromedais in the Bargello, and replaced by a cast.
Among his works of art not already mentioned, many of which have perished, were a colossal Mars for a fountain at Fontainebleau and the bronzes of the doorway, coins for the Papal and Florentine states,, a Jupiter in silver of life size, and a bronze bust of Bindo Altoviti. The works of decorative art are, speaking broadly, rather florid than chastened in style.
