English-speaking readers will be particularly interested in Leeflang's contribution: "Casanova between Venice and Dux (1782-1785)."

  • Masters, John. Casanova Classic Biography. ISBN 0141390387. According to amazon.co.uk, this title will be published in the United Kingdom in January, 2001. On-line information is very scanty, but presumably this is a re-issue of Master's 1969 biography of Casanova. The most beautifully illustrated biography of C. available, Master's portrait of Casanova is accurate but rather arch, and he makes at least one very arguable assertion, speculating that Casanova was a (not very well) repressed homosexual! (Pseudonym Jean-Jacques Chevalier de Seingalt)
Soldier, spy, diplomat, writer, adventurer, chiefly remembered from his autobiography, which has established his reputation as the most famous erotic hero. Casanova's memoirs are a fascinating but unreliable account of his adventures with 122 women - according to his own counts - but they also provide an intimate portrait of the manners and life in the 18th century. His countless projects, employments, and initiatives took him through the courts of Europe - in Paris he was employed to do some espionage work by Louis XV and from London he tried to sell the secret of a cotton red dye to his own country. "I saw that everything in the world that is famous and beautiful, if we rely on the descriptions and drawings of writers and artists, always loses when we go to see it and examine it up close." (from History of My Life Giacomo Casanova was born in Venice. His father, Gaetano Casanova was an actor, who also directed some plays. He had married in 1724 Giovanna Maria (Zanetta) Farussi, an actress, and a perfect beauty. In his childhood Casanova suffered from nose bleeds, and his parents thought that he would not live long. Strong women dominated his life: his mother and a witch who helped him to stop the bleeding. Later in his life he occasionally dressed himself as a woman. Casanova's parents left him in the care of his maternal grandmother, Marzia Farussi, and went off to London. Zanetta and Gaetano returned to Venice in 1728. Casanova's father died in 1733 but Zanetta turned down all her suitors and decided to support her children on her own. However, she soon left Venice and ended in Dresden, where she was a member of the Comici Italiani ensemble.

Name: Giacomo Jacopo Girolamo Casanova de Seinglat Birth Date: Death Date: Nationality: Italian Gender: Male Occupations: writer, adventurer, memoirist Giacomo Jacopo Girolamo Casanova de Seinglat Main Biography The Italian adventurer Giacomo Jacopo Girolamo Casanova de Seingalt (1725-1798) is best known for his memoirs, which are a most revealing record of 18th-century European society. The first child of an actor and actress, Casanova was born in Venice. He set out to play the comedy of life with a short role as an ecclesiastic but was expelled from the seminary in 1743. He found refuge in Rome with Cardinal Acquaviva, the first of his many powerful protectors. By 1745 he had returned to Venice, where he practiced magic. Forced to flee prosecution for engaging in the black arts, Casanova drifted from city to city. In Lyons in 1750 he joined the Free Masons, an allegiance that gave him support in the noble, free thinking circles of cosmopolitan Europe. Gambling, profiteering, and amorous activities marked his first stay in Paris (1750-1753). His luck held until 1755, when he was imprisoned in Venice for "black magic, licentiousness, and atheism." His spectacular escape is chronicled in the only portion of his memoirs to appear during his lifetime (1788).

Casanova: the world-class lover who died a second-rate librarian in Bohemia
[28-04-2005] By Brian Kenety Listen 16kb/s 32kb/s So infamous a womanizer was the Italian-born libertine Giacomo Casanova that, a full two centuries after his death, his name remains synonymous with the art of seduction. But if not for the years he spent in the employ of Count Waldstein of Bohemia as a librarian, Casanova, "the world's greatest lover"—-a one-time consort of European royalty, popes and cardinals, and man known to the likes of Voltaire, Goethe and Mozart-—may have been consigned to obscurity. As it was, he barely found the peace to write his memoirs.

A brief biography of the famous Italian Adventurer of the Eighteenth Century.
By Sonal Panse, 3/13/2005 I have been reading 'The Memoirs of Casanova', and listening to 'Nessun Dorma' as background score. There are twelve volumes in all and every single page is an entertaining, rollicking read. Only the perverse, the determined, or the very weary would really need the admonition to not fall asleep.
Casanova, whose full name was Giovanni Giacomo Casanova de Seingalt (1725-1798), was a colorful, unscrupulous rogue, known more these days for his amorous adventures than for his other enlivening activities as a soldier, spy, prisoner, diplomat, businessman, and adventurer. The man apparently never had a dull moment in his life, and neither does he appeared to have ever lacked in courage or failed to have a deep appreciation for the many varied experiences that came his way. Of course, he is a bit boastful, a little vain, a great deal thoughtless and careless, and his lack of scruples - especially taken in the modern context - are sometimes more horrendous than hilarious - and would in all likelihood land him a long term jail sentence too. But for all that he comes across as a very charming, highly intelligent personality, wise and perceptive in many ways, and with a fine sense of humor. It's difficult not to like such an individual.

Asteroid 7328 Casanova was discovered on September 20, 1984, by Czech astronomer Antonin Mrkos at Klet Observatory in the Czech Republic, and named for Italian writer and adventurer Giacomo Casanova (1725-1798), who is best known for his bedroom acrobatics but who was also an accomplished author who wrote on a wide variety of topics, including mathematical and astronomical works, alchemical treatises, fantasy novels, and his memoirs, and invented the lottery. He ended his days as a librarianfunny but true. Asteroid Casanova has a period of 4 years, 41 days. Giacomo Casanova
Astrologically, Casanova gets much, if not all, of its influence from the reputation of its namesake as an accomplished tomcatter, perhaps also from his invention of the lottery, which as a form of gambling also has a certain amoral quality. I don't want to sound like a preacher or a Mrs. Grundy, but when you play the lottery, no one's stopping you from blowing literally your all on lottery tickets, for you're a grownup; if you then end up scrounging in Dumpsters for meals and living in your car, that's your problem. You had your fun(and enriched the state treasury to the tune of however much you plunked down). If it hurts you, too bad. Which is to say that Casanova indicates pleasure in its most self-centered, amoral and uncaring form.
