Lewis Carroll
Lewis Carroll was born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson on January 27, 1832, in Daresbury, Cheshire. Carroll was the third child born to a family of eleven children. From an early age he entertained himself and his family by performing magic tricks and by writing poetry for his homemade newspapers. Charles Lutwidge was a great writer, a famous photographer, mathematician, and illustrator. Carroll entered Rugby School, in 1846; twelve years later he graduated with honors in mathematics from Christ Church College, Oxford. He excelled in the study of mathematics and writing. After he graduated, he remained at the college to teach. His mathematical writings include An Elementary Treatise on Determinants, Euclid and His Modern Rivals, and Curiosa Mathematica. Additionally, Carroll began to pursue photography; he often selected children as the subject of his portraits. One of his favorite models was a young girl named Alice Liddell, who later became the basis for Carroll's fictional character, Alice. He abandoned photography in early 1880s and focused on his writing. In 1865, Carroll published Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Seven years later, he published Through the Looking Glass. Lewis Carroll died in Guildford, Surrey, on January 14, 1898.

http://www.knowl.demon.co.uk/page33.html
Born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson at Daresbury, Cheshire, England, in 1832, he was educated at Rugby and Oxford, took orders in 1861, and was a lecturer in mathematics at Christ Church College, Oxford, from 1855-81 when he resigned to devote his life to writing under his pseudonym, Lewis Carroll.
As a boy he was fascinated by the craft of conjuring and this, together with ideas for games, puzzles, anagrams, riddles, chess problems, mathematical recreation and logic, occupied his mind for all of his life. He was responsible for many original puzzles and new innovations, including ‘Doublets’ invented in 1879 and ‘The Game of Logic’ in 1886.
One can appreciate the extent of his obsession with puzzles when considering that almost all seventy-two of his ‘Pillow-Problems’, many of which had complicated mathematical solutions, were compiled by him while lying awake at night. He would commit nothing to paper until the morning, when he would first of all write down the answer, followed by the question and then the detailed solution.
The children’s classic: ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ (1865) was written for the young Alice Liddell, the daughter of the head of his Oxford college. along with its sequel ‘Through the Looking Glass’ (1872) it combines elements of fantasy, logic and nonsense. He also wrote nonsense verse, notably ‘The Hunting of the Snark’ (1876).

It is paralleled in certain respects by that of his younger contemporary Gerard Manley Hopkins. The poems of Hopkins and the fantasies of Carroll were written in the heart of the Victorian era by bachelor clergy-men who led academic, ascetic, restricted, intensely religious lives. Both were fascinated by the study of words."

Language Activities MAIN INDEX PAGE Email Us The one-stop resource for the English language and more ... English Literature Lewis Carroll 1832 - 1898 Many of Lewis Carroll's philosophies were based on games. He primarily wrote comic fantasies and humorous verse that was often very childlike. Carroll published his novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, followed by Through the Looking Glass in 1872. Alice's story began as a piece of extemporaneous whimsy meant to entertain three girls on a boating trip in 1862. Both of these works were considered children's novels that were satirical in nature and in exemplification of Carrol's wit. Also famous is Carroll's poem "Jabberwocky," in which he created nonsensical words from word combinations. Lewis Carroll died in Guildford, Surrey, on January 14, 1898. QUOTATIONS: "If there's no meaning in it, said the King, that saves a world of trouble, you know as we needn't try to find any". "Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end; then stop".
Alice came to a fork in the road. "Which road do I take?" she asked.
