80. Major Professional Productions Staged In Hardy S Lifetime

Major Professional Productions Staged in Hardy's Lifetime: Checklist
The following is a checklist of professional productions, staged during Hardy's lifetime, of adaptations based upon his works and of which he was aware (even if, as occasionally happened, the only interest he took in them was fuelled by the vigorous hope of their discontinuance). The only exception to the list's restriction to performances occurring during Hardy's life is the inclusion of the posthumous (1929) revival of the Philip Ridgeway production of Hardy's own Tess , which gave Gertrude Bugler the opportunity at last to play the title role on a professional stage.
Far From the Madding Crowd , by J. Comyns Carr and Thomas Hardy. Opened at the Prince of Wales Theatre, Liverpool, 27 February 1882, with Marion Terry as Bathsheba and Charles Cartwright as Troy. After a provincial tour that included Bradford, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle, it opened at the Globe Theatre, London, 29 April 1882.
Cast (London): Gabriel Oak , Charles Kelley; Frank Troy , John H. Barnes;
