David quickly agrees that he was drawn to the socio-political overtones on They Live , but says his main incentive to do the picture was John Carpenter himself, for whom David did his first film role in The Thing "I loved working with John; he shows a lot of respect and appreciation for his actors and helps them grow. In this case, I was also attracted to working with Roddy Piper, who has been a real pleasure to know. This film has been a very satisfying experience, both artistically and ethically."

HELPED FOUND THIS CITY, ALSO ERIE He came to Kansas First in 1857, Settling After the War in this County. Internal Revenue Collector of Kansas and Indian Territory for Ten Years. Col. J. C. Carpenter, one of the founders of Chanute, also of Erie, the county seat of this county, Civil war veteran, Kansas pioneer, prominent for many years in state and national affairs, and a successful business man, died at 10:45 o’clock Saturday evening after having been ill for two months. The funeral services will be held in the Methodist church at 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. They will be conducted by the pastor, Dr. W. A. Keve. The body will lie in state in the church from 1 to 3 o’clock in the afternoon during which time his friends may look for the last time upon the face of the man who had been associated with Chanute since the very time of its beginning. The Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic will place upon the Colonel’s breast a small flag to be taken with him to his final resting place.

August 2001 Movie Review: John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars Rated R by Jim Jenkins Directed by John Carpenter Starring Natasha Henstridge and Ice Cube Remember that the title of this film is not just Ghosts of Mars . It's John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars . You know, the guy who brought you Starman Halloween , and Assault on Precinct 13 Ghosts of Mars will probably be remembered about as much as that last one is. It's your typical horror flick full of self-mutilating zombies, only they're on Mars. It's the 22nd century. Mars has been colonized and terraformed. Society is matriarchal... sort of. A group of cops (led by Natasha Henstridge) is sent to pick up an accused murderer (Ice Cube) from a prison camp, only to discover the camp deserted and the workers slaughtered. The characters must fight off a bunch of Martian zombies in order to safely escape the camp. Whenever Ghosts of Mars tempted me to be interested, it just got silly. The matriarchal thing could have been fascinating if it was either more subtle, more detailed (after all, what exactly does that mean?), or more relevant to the whole story. As it was, it was just plain hokey. Similarly, the sci-fi element was almost a throw-in. There's an intriguing background plot about ancient Martian inhabitants, but with the unwilling heroes running around in leather trench coats and sporting uzis, you feel less like you're on Mars and more like you're in Los Angeles.

He was still a captain at the battle of Shiloh, where he won the praise of Col. R. F. Looney, commander of his regiment, who declared that "Captain Carter deserved the highest praise for his great coolness and high courage displayed throughout the entire engagement. At one time he took the flag, and urging his men forward, rendered me great assistance in advancing the entire regiment." His promotion was rapid through the grades of major and lieutenant-colonel to that of colonel of the regiment. He had reached this latter position when, at the battle of Perryville, he commanded his regiment in one of the hottest fights of the war.
