Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881)
Though his essays and histories do not command the attention today that they did in the Victorian era, the world of literature owes an enormous debt to Thomas Carlyle, from Ecclefechan in the Scottish Lowlands. In 1837, Carlyle gave us the great masterpiece of historical writing, The French Revolution. Early in his career as a teacher, Carlyle read extensively in English, German and French literature, becoming heavily influenced by Gibbon, Hume, Voltaire and Mme de Stael. His biography of Schiller appeared in The London Magazine (1823-4) and he also translated part of Goethe's Wilhelm Meister to satisfy a growing demand for works on German culture.
Many of Carlyle's articles were published in The Edinburgh Review (late 1820's), some of them dealing with contemporary social problems. During this time, he wrote essays on Goethe, published his revolutionary Sartor Resartus, followed by Voltaire, Diderot and The Diamond Necklace. It was only after he moved to London in 1834 and he published his history of the French Revolution, that Carlyle achieved worldwide fame.
As historian, social reformer and prophet, Carlyle has few equals. His whole philosophy was influenced by his idea of the Divine Will, proof of which is the duty of the poet and historian to express. His writings try to explain what has motivated human behaviour through the ages. One of Carlyle's most remembered lines: "No great man lives in vain. The history of the world is but the biography of great men."

Thomas Carlyle, 1795-1881
Gloomy Scottish sage and highly influential man of letters, Thomas Carlyle was the leading British disciple of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and German Romanticism. He was also, in his youth, quite partial to Saint-Simonism and a supporter of the Chartist movement. However, in later life, the positions he took on political and economic affairs seemed more in line with reactionary Toryism. Carlyle is renowned for his passionate, preacher-like opposition to industrial society that was emerging in Britain, captured in his Chartism (1840) and, especially, Past and Present (1843), a book much admired by Frederick Engels . Carlyle was not an economist or even a scholar, but more like an Old Testament prophet. His utter disdain for economists and economics is well known it was he who characterized it as "the dismal science". In his view, it was the economists and their theories which served as the apologistic ideological and religious buttress of the industrial revolution that, in his view, was destroying Britain. At one point, he recommended that economists ought to be "popularly elected" as a way to make them accountable to the population that their theories were helping ruin. Nonetheless, he was, at least for a time, a friend of John Stuart Mill . He was also a close friend of fellow sage, John

Thomas Carlyle Quotes
Every noble work is at first impossible. Music is well said to be the speech of angels. Every new opinion at its starting is precisely a minority of one. A man lives by believing in something, not by debating and arguing about many things. The crash of the whole solar and stellar systems could only kill you once. No man who has once heartily and wholly laughed can be altogether irreclaimably bad. It is not a lucky word, this name "impossible"; no good comes of those who have it so often in their mouths. No great man lives in vain. The history of the world is but the biography of men. A great man shows his greatness by the way he treats little men. The courage we desire and prize is not the courage to die decently, but to live manfully. Nothing stops the man who desires to achieve. Every obstacle is simply a course to develop his achievement muscle. Our grand business in life is not to see what lies dimly at a distance, but to do what clearly lies at hand. A man lives by believing in something, not by debating and arguing about many things.
