Bacon, Francis
Bacon was the lord chancellor of England; his removal in 1621 makes for a most interesting story. For legal philosophers, however, Francis Bacon is most well known for his delineation of the principles of the inductive scientific method , which constituted a breakthrough in the approach to science. Bacon was the originator of the expression, "Knowledge is power."
Bagehot, Walter
Mr. Bagehot was a mathematician; a moral philosopher; a political economist; a trained, though not a practising, lawyer; a banker; a shipowner; and, from 1860 till his too early death in 1877, the editor and manager of the Economist . Primarily, however, Bagehot was a reader and critic of books. I have a number of Bagehot's books including:

    Benjamin Cardozo
Born in 1870, Benjamin Cardozo was the son of Judge Albert Cardozo and Rebecca Nathan. Albert was a vice president and trustee of Congregation Shearith Israel, and Benjamin celebrated his bar mitzvah there. The family lived a well-mannered upper-class life which might have been depicted in an Edith Wharton novel. But the Cardozo family image suffered a major setback when Albert a Tammany Hall appointee to the bench, resigned his judgeship in 1872, just as a legislative committee was about to impeach him for nepotism. After his bar mitzvah, Cardozo stopped attending religious services. In later life, he described himself as an agnostic, but he never failed to identify himself as a proud Jew and remained a Jewish traditionalist in many respects, He refused to allow pork and shellfish into his home and kept a seat at Shearith Israel throughout his life. In 1895, at age 25, he opposed the elimination of gender-segregated seating in the synagogue, a change that would have altered the Sephardic Orthodox minhag . Cardozo delivered a long address, according to the congregational minutes, "impressive in ability and eloquence," which carried the day for the traditionalist side.

    In the Beginning
The origins of Cardozo date back to the 1960s, when the trustees of Yeshiva approved a resolution authorizing the University to take the steps necessary to create a law school. It had long been President Samuel Belkin's dream to transform Yeshiva from a college into a full-fledged university, a process started in earnest with the creation of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1955. The addition of a law school would largely complete his vision. Belkin believed that the University could "make a significant contribution to the field of law, and that a need exists for a law school shaped by tradition, yet able to blend precedent with the complex requirements of modern society, and free to explore all avenues leading to excellence in legal education."
The University's desire for a law school went even deeper. As President Norman Lamm, who succeeded Belkin one month before Cardozo opened, recently noted, "Law is very important to Judaism. The most revered personalities in Jewish history were jurists. And in the Jewish tradition, you cannot have law without spirit, nor can you have spirit without law. Because law without spirit becomes harsh and not very human, and spirit without law becomes anarchic, moody, formless, it is not fixed, it has no structure. So, law gives structure to the metaphysical quest that is fundamental to religion."

Signature: "Benjamin N. Cardozo/March, 1935" as Associate Justice , 5x3 card. Lightly soiled. 2 light paper clip impressions at top blank edge. Overall, fine condition. Accompanied by the original postmarked envelope addressed by Cardozo to Mrs. Sarah J. Newland in Hyde Park, Mass. Lightly soiled and stained. Cardozo (1870-1938) was nominated as Associate Justice in 1932 by President Hoover to replace Oliver Wendell Holmes. He served until his death in 1938. In his private law practice, Cardozo quickly gained recognition as a "lawyer's lawyer", preparing briefs and arguments for other attorneys to use in trials. His Supreme Court career paralleled the New Deal's most innovative domestic reform activities and Cardozo voted to uphold most of this legislation. Two items.

  • Encyclopedia
Supreme Court, United States, highest court of the United States, established by Article 3 of the Constitution of the United States. Scope and Jurisdiction Section 1 of Article 3 of the Constitution provides for vesting the judicial power of the United States in one supreme court and in such inferior courts as Congress establishes. Section 2 defines the scope of U.S. judicial power and establishes the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court. The judicial power extends to all cases arising under the Constitution, laws, and treaties of the United States; to cases concerning foreign diplomats and admiralty practice; and to diversity cases (those between citizens of different states) and cases in which the United States or a state is a party (however, the Eleventh Amendment, adopted in 1798, forbids federal cognizance of cases brought against a state by citizens of another state or by citizens of a foreign state). The cases in which the Supreme Court has original jurisdiction—i.e., where another court need not first consider the controversy—are those in which diplomats or a state is a party; even here, it has been held, inferior courts may enjoy concomitant jurisdiction. In all other federal cases the Supreme Court exercises appellate jurisdiction, but subject to limitations and regulations made by Congress.
